Counseling Service Offers
New Study Skills Courses
The University Counseling
Service is introducing a new
study skills and reading pro
gram this school year.
Dr. Clay Gerken, director,
said three different types of
courses will be offered free of
charge this semester, but no
credit can be earned toward
graduation.
For Freshmen
According to Dr. Gerken,
the first course, study skills,
will commence today for
freshman students who were
In the lower halves of their
high school graduating
classes and for transfer stu
dents whose records are in
adequate. The second course, remedi
al reading, will run from Oc
tober 13 through November
20. Designed to improve read
ing comprehension and speed,
the course will be open to all
students, particularly those
w ho discover during their first
weeks of school that they can
not cover their assignments
adequately.
Reading Efficiency
The third course, speed
reading, will help top-notch
students become even better
and will emphasize the impor
tance of increasing reading ef
ficiency to the maximum so
that students can read more
widely than they have in the
past.
The course in speed read
ing, which begins Dec. 1,
is open only to freshman
students who were in the top
quarter of their high . school
graduating classes and to oth
er undergraduate students
whose grade averages are 80
per cent or above.
Union Salesmen
Buttonhole Frosh
It takes just $12.05 to rid
yourself of all the hucksters
in the Student Union.
Not many students were
that cooperative, but the
freshman who wandered into
the Union with a full billfold
and little will-power last week
easily could have shelled out
this amount.
Frosh Barbecue tickets sold
at $1, and no one should be
aught without a Builders
calendar only 50c.
Red and white pens cost
30c. Or perhaps music is your
love $4 for a Community
Concert series ticket. Corn
huskers run $5.50, and don't
forget the Frosh Hop for 75c.

No Numbers
In Directory?
. "No telephone numbers?"
worried students wailed to
each other with the discov
ery that the Student Di
rectory cards this year had
omitted that all important
campus communications
device.
The directory committee,
however, said that the over
sight might cause even
more telephone numbers to
be printed than last year.
Gretchen Saeger, chair
man, reported that many
students were asked for
their numbers personally by
the persons at the check
stand, and that the rest of
the numbers would be ob
tained from lists at Admini
stration. Miss Saeger added that
the directories would be
distributed before Thanks
giving vacation, and pos
sibly by the first week in
November.
