Tuesday, September 16, 1958 The Doily Ncbraskon, Page 3 Counseling Service Offers New Study Skills Courses The University Counseling Service is introducing a new study skills and reading pro gram this school year. Dr. Clay Gerken, director, said three different types of courses will be offered free of charge this semester, but no credit can be earned toward graduation. For Freshmen According to Dr. Gerken, the first course, study skills, will commence today for freshman students who were In the lower halves of their high school graduating classes and for transfer stu dents whose records are in adequate. The second course, remedi al reading, will run from Oc tober 13 through November 20. Designed to improve read ing comprehension and speed, the course will be open to all students, particularly those w ho discover during their first weeks of school that they can not cover their assignments adequately. Reading Efficiency The third course, speed reading, will help top-notch students become even better and will emphasize the impor tance of increasing reading ef ficiency to the maximum so that students can read more widely than they have in the past. The course in speed read ing, which begins Dec. 1, is open only to freshman students who were in the top quarter of their high . school graduating classes and to oth er undergraduate students whose grade averages are 80 per cent or above. Union Salesmen Buttonhole Frosh It takes just $12.05 to rid yourself of all the hucksters in the Student Union. Not many students were that cooperative, but the freshman who wandered into the Union with a full billfold and little will-power last week easily could have shelled out this amount. "Where Campus friends Meet" Loud Cries No Numbers In Directory? . "No telephone numbers?" worried students wailed to each other with the discov ery that the Student Di rectory cards this year had omitted that all important campus communications device. The directory committee, however, said that the over sight might cause even more telephone numbers to be printed than last year. Gretchen Saeger, chair man, reported that many students were asked for their numbers personally by the persons at the check stand, and that the rest of the numbers would be ob tained from lists at Admini stration. Miss Saeger added that the directories would be distributed before Thanks giving vacation, and pos sibly by the first week in November. Lancaster Rites Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret F. Lancaster, wife of Lane Lancaster, professor of political science at the Uni versity, were held Monday at St. Matthews Church. Mrs. Lancaster, 64, died Saturday. Survivors include her hus band and two stepdaughters, Mrs. R. E. Hopkins of Lin coln and Mrs. J. Gordon i.Logue of Philadelphia.
