Notre Dame Spoils
Nebraska's Win Bid
By DEL RASMUSSEN
Edition Sports Editor
The University of Nebraska cage
dub tasted defeat for the second
time this season as they fell before
15th nationally ranked! Notre
Dame team Monday night, 69-56.
The Huskers now have a 2-2 sea
son record since losing to Michigan
last week. They won their first
two games from South Dakota
State and Wyoming.
The game began with the Husk
ers bottling up the Notre Dame
team's biggest scoring threat, co
Captain John McCarthy and stead
ily increasing their lead for 12
minutes of the contest but then
the Irish scored a quick seven
points to take the lead, 18-16.
At the half the Huskers had
come from behind to ck the gap
to five, 39-34. But at the beginning
of the second canto the Notre
Dame five poured in a quick 10
points and the Huskers could never
gain catch up.
The win gave the Irish their
third straight win for the season.
Their victory saw co-captain John
McCarthy toss in 26 points and
Tom Hawkins, Tom Reinhart and
McCarthy garner 40 rebounds to
Nebraska's team total of 30 in
keeping the Huskers away from
the ball.
The Irish had only 11 points in
free throws get tings the entire
total in the first half but their tor
rid shooting gamt gave them the
superb advantage over the Huskers
hitting 20 field goals. The Notre
Dame squad hit 29 fielders.
Little Gary Reimers again paced
the Husker scoring with 18 points.
His efforts were tremendous and
were aided by Herschell Turner's
16 points and Bob Mayo's 13 points
but Nebraska just could not over
come the South Bend club.
The Bushmen now move back to
Lincoln where they will ee action
against Purdue this Saturday and
Denver on the following Monday.
Purdue faced another Big Eight
team last Monday and went down
to defeat at the hands of the Kan
sas State Wildcats. For the victors
Bob Boozer potted 25 points.

Don Schwall, stellar cage per
former for the Oklahoma Sooners
has quit the team to accept a
baseball contract with a major
league team sometime "within the
week."
Last year the big six foot five
sophomore led the Sooner squad in
rebounds with 201 and compiled a
scoring mark of 15.9 per game. So
far this season he has scored S9
points in three games far a 13.0
average.
Schwall, a junior from Ypsilanti,
Michigan, told newsmen that he
has been approached for pitching
talents from at least one club. He
is also discussing contracts with
the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia
Phillies, Detroit Tipers, Kansas
City A's, and the Pittsburgh Pi
rates. The bonus was reported to
be around $50,000.
Schwall is a righthanded fireball
artist that saw little action last
year for the Sooners on the dia
mond. He pitched nine innings and
jost one game wnue compiling a
4.85 earned run average. Don
struck out 10 and walked nine
while playing for the Sooners.
Don Schwall's loss will be heav
ily felt by Coach Doyle Parrack's
cage club. Last year Schwall
erased Joe King's sophomore scor
ing record of 15.5 set the year be
fore. The highly touted junior
scored 367 points, only two less
than fiid Joe King.
The 20 year-old junior had a 23
point scoring average in his sen
ior year in Michigan where he
earned all-State honors and was
Vpsilami captain of the basketball
team his last year. j

Last year co-captains were not
named and every game a pair of
seniors were picked to head each
game as honorary co-capuins. In
1956 there were three captains for
the club. These were Bob Bercuin,
LaVerne Torwon and Jim Murphy.
Mike Lee, junior end. from
Grand Island, played end last sea
son and was constantly lauded for
his outstanding defensive work.
Time after time his tackles stop
ped the opposing team from gain
ing any ground around his flank.
Mike is in Engineering college and
had one of the highest averages
on the squad. He was named to a
allscholastic team this past season

Dick MeCashland, junior center!

A Winner?
If nothing else the Huskers can
boast a winner in that of Dan
Brand, Cornhusker heavyweight
wrestler. Dan produced well for
the matmen last year under Coach
j eoiicm iiu uc&au me c-
! son off this year as winner of the
heavyweight title at the Iowa State
Teachers Tournament.
Dan, a senior in Engineering Col
lege, was one of the best liked
and most respected wrestlers in
the tourney.
Since I have had the privilege to
live with Dan for the past couple
of years I can readily see where
pps w

he gained this distinction. His mild
mwners and quietness would
make him almost inconspicious if
' it were not for his hulking frame.
He towers over the six font mark
(six-foot-five) and presents a for-
1 midable 200 and some odd pounds
on his body.
Dan is very concientious about
wrestling, even in practice. He
doesnt get too many takers. At
the beginning of the year some of
the freshmen had ideas of doing
things that no man in the Sigma
Nu house had done yet to pin
Dan Brand but as of yet no one
has turned the trick . . . and the
field is getting rather small.
As far as commanding respect,
Dan has that well under control
also. His favorite program on the
video set is Cheyenne and when
that time rolls around everyone
near is quiet for Dan's program
. . . or else.
