Nebraska, 1918-49 Big Seven
co-champions, will try tor their
first win of the 1949 season Sat
urday as the Cornhuskers enter
tain the Jckhabbits of South Da
kota State.
Heading the list of South Da
kota State players is Capt. Don
Bartlett. 6-0 forward from Cen
terville. South Dakota. As a fresh
man in 1947. Bartlett scored 12
points against the Huskers.
The Sodak quintet, after losing
their opening game to a strong
Mankato Teachers team, 38-37,
proposes a serious threat to the
Cornhuskers hopes for an easy
victory.
Other starters for the Jackrab
bits are Kermit Nelson, Robert
Murphy, Herb Bartling and Bill
Cook.
Nelson. 6-1 junior from Brook
ings, will be playing opposite
Bartle'i in a forward slot.
Two -Man Affair.
The South Dakota State scoring
machine is a two-man affair with
Bartlett and a Bartling doing
themselves justice in field goal
statistics for the Jackrabbits.
The man picked to hold down
Nebraska's All-Big Seven center,
Bus Whitehead, is 6-6 Cook, vet
eran center for the Sodak five.
Filling out the first quintet is
Murphy, the only sophomore on
the squad, and his 6 feet boosts
the Jackrabbits height average to
j better than 6 feet.
Leading the Huskers in their
first appearance, Anton Lawry
will start at forward and also as
game captain for the Huskers. At
6-3 Lawry, a two time letterman,
should use his height to good ad
vantage in rebounding under both
boards.
Last Season.
Two of the first five, Bob Cerv
and Bus Whitehead, will be play
ing their last season for the Corn
huskers. Last year Cerv and
Whitehead were regular members
of the winning Nebraska team

total of 454 points, which proved
influential in the Big Seven title
race.
Joe Malecek, forward defensive
giant for the Huskers, will start
the Sodak encounter opposite
game captain Lawry.
The remaining guard position
on the Nebraska squad will be
filled by either Bob Gates or
Larry Walsh.
Coach Harry Good will be hop
ing for a one-sided score in the
Husker-Jackrabbit clash in order
to give the , sophomores on the
Nebraska team a chance to prove
their ability under actual game
