Huskers Face
Sparse Indoor
Track Season
Nebraska's graduation - riddled
ppikesters will crack open the
1943 season at Columbia on Feb.
13 and will face Kansas State here
Feb. 20, according to Big Six
schedules released.
"Our material is pretty skimpy
but we are going all out with what
we have," said Headman Ed Weir,
glancing over his cinder prodigies,
last Saturday.
Few Vets.
"We have a few veterans and a
few other boys who should get us
some points, but I won't know
what to expect until after the
second semester begins," declared
Weir.
Top sprint candidates are Al
Brown and Bob Eowles, pressed
bv a speedy newcomer, Dick Fe
tring, but Weir hopes to round
these into a more formidable crop
by luring gridders Zikmund and
Cooper into the fold.
Brown and Bowles lead the pack
of quartermen and either may
have to take a shot at half miler
competition.
Nebraska appears potent in the
shot put where hefty Vic Schleich,
Ki Eisenhart and Howie Debus
hold the fort. All three are vet
eran weightmen and will double
in the discus. Debus will be around
again in the pole vault when he
chopped off a chunk of points last
year and will be backed by an
other bamboo man in Don James,
Evanston, 111., sophomore.
The Big Six annual conference
indoor meet is slated for Kansas
City on Feb. 27, which eliminates
the possibility of freshmen break
ing into action in the indoor meets

COMINU.- HEVMOB U IBANCB"
Oh, Well . . .
I guess the Hvtskers are back where they can do more dam
age among their Big Six mates . . . Don't ever cut the Huskers
in ine lavored role on a basketball floor because when they oc
cupy that position they usually turn up on the short end of the
count . . . Yes, I m talking about the Huskers when thev are at
tired in their cage scanties . . . Just consider that 50 to 38 dt-
bade performed capably by the Iowa State Cyclones on Ames
Maples Monday night.
Press Notices . . .
The Scarlet crew was favored to trounce the Cyclones . . .
Here is what one spoils scribe sail before came time Monday,
The Huskers currently arc the surprise team of the Hig Six
loop. Against Iowa State tonight, Nebraska has an excellent
chance to keep its string intact. The Cyclones are not only under
par but Kollin Kuebler, high scoring ace, will be out of the con
test. It would he some kind of a hi;h for Nebraska to play its
first three games on the road and come up with a like number
of victories" . . . Well, they can look iorward to that ' high.
As Underdogs ...
That was the situation when the Scarlet cagers were fa
vored to win hands down . . . But in all fairness, look at them
when they aren't in the top spot and are the underdogs . . . They
nearly took Indiana into camp losing only by a single tally and
the Hoosiers are one of the top teams m the nation . . . now
that they are not in the favored spot once more, they can rare
back and turn in upsets of which they are capable ... At least
that is the way it looks from our vantage point: When they are
favored, they fall short when they are not, don t sen inem
short.
Scoring Parade . . .
Johnnv Thompson continues to he the Huskers nomination
f L ... ii. 1"
for hich scorer as he turned in eight more tallies to aua to ins
22 and to jrivc him a 10 point average for three conference tilts
. . Rob lleinzelnian led the Scavlet scoring with 10 points and
he will soon be in the upper bracket of Big Six scorers . . . Kan
sas U. will mix with K-State in Manhattan tonirht so there goes
all prc-scason dope for when those two teams get togther any
thing can happen.
A Preview . . .
rwii Tn Fanrot and his football staff at the University
of Missouri have been given two-month contracts at same sai-
4W rew inst. vpar . . . "Pendiner the decision of the armed
services on the use of the university, we have continued the old
staff on last year's basic for two months ending March 1, was
the official statement accompanying the move ... It may be a
preview of things to come.
