Defensive Show; Huskers
Tie for Third in Big Six
BY BOB MILLER.
University Coliseum, Feb. 7.
Ability to get a lead and keep it
was the deciding factor as Ne
braska's underrated cagers hand
ed invading Iowa State basketeers
a 39-31 lacing to gain a tie for
third place in conference stand
ings. The Huskers captured the lead
two and a half minutes after the
contest's start and never relin
quished it during the remainder.
The halftime score was 19-15 in
favor of the host club.
Personal Fueding.
Defensive play highlighted the
encounter since it brought to
gether Sid Held and Al Budolfson,
high scoring Cyclone sensation.
During the first half, Budolfson
was assigned to guard Held and he
did such an effective job that he
limited the Nebraskan to four
points but in doing so he collected
three fouls for himself.
In the second canto the Iowa
star was assigned elsewhere and
Held went to town, scoring 12
points to annate scoring honors.
John Thompson, Husker forward,
duplicated Budolfson's feat using
the Iowan in the same role. While
Thompson was guarding him, Bu
dolfson netted but four points.
Slow Scoring Game.
Aside from these personal side
lights, the tilt was a slow one
along the scoring lines. Held start
ed the scoring with his conversion
following a foul by Budolfson. He
ended the point-gathering, also, by
taking advantage of Carol
Schneider's foul.
Kenny Elson, sophomore substi
tute, started his first game at
the forward position and his first
half net swishing added to his in
spired interceptionist role enabled
the Huskers to maintain their ini
tial lead.
Starting the second period off
in blistering style, the Huskers
doubled their advantage in seven
minutes and from that point on

they could not be headed. Budolf
son and Held started matching
baskets at this point to raise the
score, making no change in the
leader's role.
Due to his last half rally, Held
led the scoring column with 14
points followed closely by his rival,
Budolfson, with 12. Kenny Elson
ranked next with 9 points.
Huskers Move Up.
The win over the Cyclones
places the Nebraska squad in a
tie with the Iowa team for third
place honors. Kansas and Okla
homa still head the conference
list.
Nebraska is scheduled to enter
tain the Sooners next Saturday
evening in a tilt that should decide
whether or not the Huskers will
land a first division post.
Turnabout.
-Last weekend the same Cy
clone team trimmed the Huskers
on the Ames court with Budolfson
setting the pace with 21 points.
Max Young's guarding and El
son's intercepting talents were
pleasing to the sparse crowd that
attended.

TakeMcet,24-6
Newt Copple, 145 pounds and
Herb Jackman, heavyweight, were
the only Husker point winners as
Nebraska matmen fell before a
superior group of manpower, Iowa
U. The final score was 24-6.
The Iowans won three of the
eight events by falls and the re
mainder that they won were of
the decision nature. Besides Cop
pie's exhibition of technique on
the mats, Jackman's match was
the most popular.
The largest crowd ever to wit
ness a Husker mat team in action
were satisfied with the show that
they received.
