Injection Renders People Immune
From Diptheria, According
to Director Lab.
That a vaccina which will rentier
peoif'e immune from diithoria has
been discovered; and that this vac
cine is being used on thousands of
school children in New York, were
statements made by Dr. W. H. Parks,
director of, the research laboratory
of the New; York board of health, in
his address on "Recent Develop
ments in the Control of Infectious
Diseases" yesterday at 4:30 in the
iology building.
The experiments which culminated
In the discovery of a successful vac
cine were made possible by the use
of the Schick test for the presentee
of diptheria toxin. At first the work
was carried on by the use of guinea
pigs and rabbits, but as the experi
ments became consistently success
ful the tests were made on people.
Reduces Death Rate.
"In New York city with the aid
of this new vaccine, we have cut
down the number of deaths from dip
theria to one-sixth of what it former
ly was, and have reduced the num
ber of cases to two-thirds of what it
used to be," said Dr. Parks. "This
means a great saving of human life
in a city the size of New York where
thousands of diptheria cases are
handled annually. Daily Cardinal

Ford has a real vocal surprise. Van-
ca'lo and Mary1 in "Foot Feat3" have
a novel juggling act. Thos. Kelly

them. The ancient Greeks and Japa
nese used such masks to depersonal
ize the actor. They have recently re
gained favor. Masks which Mr. Benda
has made are used in the Greenwich
Village Follies at the present timo.
The masks gain their full effect only
when plays are written in which they
can be properly employed. They im
part an extraordinary dramatic quali
ty to the varying compositions of a
single dancer.
