In front of the chemistry building

dent. Just Before the Battle, Mother
By Col. E. T. Lee
Just before the battle, mother,
I am buckling on my splints,
While the surgeon on the side lines
Fixes arnica and lint.
On my head's my helmet, mother,
On my shoulder is a pad;
Rubber bandages and nose guard
Shield from ill your six-foot hid.
Just before the battle, mother,
I am thinking some of you;
Still I can't forget that full-back
Whom I've sworn an oath to do.
I am going to paste him, mother,
I shall put him in a trance;
See, even now at my suggestion
They have brought the ambulance.
REFRAIN:
Farewell, mother, you may never
Recognize me any more;
But that full-back will be missing
. When the battle cries are o'er.

As a maker of programs Walter
DamroSch, conductor of the New York
Symphony Orchestra, ' stands un
equaled among the men of his profes
sion. Naturally good conductors are
born, not made, and the man who can
wield his baton over an orchestra in a
manner vLIch will make his men do
exactly what he wants them to is a
born, conductor. This is but one
branch, however, of the art of giving
symphony concerts.-' It is necessary
likewise to arrange a program With the
proper proportion of light and shade.
If there is to be a soloist his or her
part of the program must not over
balance the rest. If a number Is
especially tragic, a gayer one must fol
low. It is in matters of this kind that
Walter Damrosch is a past master.
Mr. Damrosch has arranged many
special programs, one recalled was de
voted to "the family," whose basis was
a performance of Richard StrauM
"Domestic Symphony," in which papa,
mamma, and the baby are portrayed in
tones; another devoted to the great
composers in their lighter moods in
cluded Haydn's "Kindersymphony."
and the men in the orchestra played
cn toy whistles, drums and other
miniature instruments. -m
Music lovers will be delighted to
know that Conductor Damrosch and
the entire New York Symphony Or-
chestra will appear at the Auditorium
on the afternoon and evening of May
6th.

Seven Ages of Athlete
Jack Moakley of the Cornell Univer
sity track and field team, is working
on a chart showing the seven ages of
the athlete. Moakley names baseball,
football, track and field athletics for
the youth aad men between the ages
of 18 and 25. From 25 to 30 the ath
lete should begin to drop the more
strenuous pastimes for "those of less
exhausting effort. For men between
the ages of 30 and 40 the Cornell coach
strongly recommends tennis. For 40
onward be prescribes golf.
Why be a Crab?
If some young freshman speaks to you,
(And starts some foolish line of gab,
Just answer him in bis own way.
Omit your hauteur for a day. .
Don't be a crab!
If some old "prof" surprises you,
And gives you "D" in shop or lab.
For reasons that you cannot see,
Be glad you didn't get an "E."
Don't be a crab!
If father gets a little wary,
On expenses keeps close tab,
Do not languish in dismay;
You may treat some other day.
Don't be a crab!
If some fair maiden here or there
Gives to jour heart a ruthless stab,
Accept your-lot, and don't be sore,
For such is life the wide world o'er.
Don't be a crab!

The editor of the Vermont "Cynic"
says that one thing a person can
never learn at Vermont is promptness.
The habit of arriving late at class, at
rehearsals, and at all meetings and
appointments is becoming so prevalent,
that class room doors are now locked
against tardy entrants. In spite of
this, the editor predicts that the Uni
versity will soon be running an hour
behind scheduled time.
Flattering.

"What did you say?"
"I said I wished rop had met her
before he got 'quainted with you."
