OFF FOR THE "SUCKER" STATE
Continued, from Pago 1
commissioner of Nebraska, wrote the
following impression of his viBit and
work fn tho Wageworker, a weekly
labor magazine of whieh ho is editor.
Somo of tho extracts that might be of
intorcst to tho students in general
havo been reprinted as follows:
Maupin on the 8tand.
. "If you think it is an easy matter
to take the witness stand and answer
the questions fired at you by Blxteen
brjght young fellows who want to
know something, and know why they
want to know it, Just try It. That waB
an experience of mlno one night this
week with the debating squad of the
University of Nebraska. Glad indeed
I was to bo of whatever servlco pos
sible to these young fellows. Grilling
as was tho examination, I shall al
ways look back upon it as one of the
pleasanteBt experiences of my life.
They wont about the business, of the
evening, courteously but firmly, and
tho only thing I can liken to the way
they fired their questions is tho way a
gatling gun section gets busy when in
action.
"Tho questions wore not haphazard,
for a dozen committees havo been in
vestigating, each a separate phase of
tho 'open shop vs. closed shop' ques
tion, and each committee wanted to
know the whys and tho wherefores.
The answers had to bo to the point,
too. If it wasn't clear, they simply
hammered away until they got all the
information 'possible which was usu
ally not a great deal, but the very best
I had in stock.
Debaters Are Practical.
"But, after all, the most pleasing
feature of the whole thing is that the
unlve'rsity is getting down to practl-

delving Into this labor problem are
going to exercise a beneficial influ
ence on industrial conditions in tho
days to come. It is enlarging their
mental horizon; it is enlarging their
sympathies'; it is putting them into
close touch with tho workers upon
whom tho whole social fabric rests.
"If I succeeded in any degree In
shedding a bit of light upon the ques
tion those splendid youg fellows are
studying, I am mora than- repaid for
the terrific grilling they subjected me.
to last Tuesday night. For the oppor
tunity of expressing however feebly,
tho reasons for the union faith that is
within me, 1 thank Professor Fogg and
tho debating equad. For tho privilege
of meeting and learning to know such
a hunch of splendid young men eager
to get wise to practical things I am
even more thankful."
