LOWRY 8PEAK8 AT CON VOCATION THUR8DAY. SUBJECT "THE ART EXHIBIT" EXPLAIN8 LECTURE BY MEAN8 OF RARE WORK8OF ART. The Contribution of Modern People to Painting Is the 8clence of Color Art Must Be Cultivated to Be Appreciated. TDr. H. B'. Iwry of tills city spoke at tho Thursday convocation rolatlvo to tho Nebraska art exhibit that 1b be ing held In art hall this week. Tho Nebraska Art association, ho said, was a corporate body created for tho purpose of stimulating interest In nrt. It doos this by collecting us mnny famous paintings as posslblo and put ting them on exhibition for a number of weoks In different parts of the state. Tho money for this coiiicb from tho in dividual Btockholdors, but when tholr donations are not sufllclont to dofroy expenses, tho association Is forced to chargo a moderate price for admission to tho hall. Art Must Be Cultivated. Dr. Lowry repudiated with einplmslB tho familiar saying, "Art can not be appreciated oxcopt by Uiobo cultivated In it." It 1b mostly a maltor of train ing oneself In tho exerciso of a desire to want to appreciate It. This can bo dono by obBorvlng. Just as ono can not nnnreclato good music until ho hoarB' it, bo ho can not enjoy good paintings until ho has seen thorn. The truth of this was demonstrated by tho way his nudlonco Interested Itself In tho four paintings that the speaker had brought with him. Three Principles Necessary. Ho laid down three principles that Tiro necessary to produco -a plctu.ro- experience, feeling, and power of ex ecution. Tho university haB aB Its aim tho toachlng of tho first two, but ik to tho lattor wo must bo content with seeing tho product of thoBo who have it. That is tho reason why attompts nro made to bring tho masterpieces boforo tho people. Tho speaker brought out tho point that tho art of today Ib modorn. Thore Is much, of courso, that It can adopt from the old masters, yet by maintain ing modorn standards, It 1b in better condition to appeal to tho modorn mind. So to he real, art musfreflect the cir cumstances that it produces. Contribute Science of Color. Dr. Lowry also said that tho great est contribution of modern people to painting is the science of colors. It is only In the later generations that landscape painting has been consid ered a phase of tho higher arts. Tho old masters used landscapes only for backgrounds and then painted thorn for tho moat part from memory or pic tures. But now the painter realizes the value of values, and in order to get them ho must got Into tho atmos phere of his work. This has led to the accomplishment of great things in nrt. It has united nature and human ity, and through this medium a stronger appeal is made to the mind than heretofore. PHI ALPHA TAU BANQUET.
