WESTERN NEBRASKA THE
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION
AGRICULTURAL CLUB LEARNED
OF CONDITIONS THERE.
PROFESSOR HUNT TIJE LEADER
Former University Man Is Principal
Speaker In Discussion of
Many Interesting,
Experiments:
Tho Agricultural Club held Kb reg
ular meeting Saturday fevenlng nt tho
Temple. Tho meellng' was devoted to
a symposium ya agricultural condl
tiontt in western and central Nebraska.
Tlip principal speaker of the ovenlng
wbb Prof. E. W. Hunt of SyracuBc, ono
of tho best authoritioB on Farming In
Nebraska. Mr. Hunt was formerly a
profcBBor in the English literature de
partment of the University of Nebras
ka. Ho Ib lecturing beforo farmors
Institutes ths winter on conserva
tion, -Irrigation and other subjects.
Professor Hunt presided over tho.
meeting.
Three papers wore read by members
of the club, as follows: "Grazing," A.
D. .Mlddloton, '12; "Summer Tlllngo,"
A. H. Beckhoff, '12, ami "Irrigation,"
B. M. Barber, '12. Some aBtounding
facts relative to the possibilities of
tho high plulnB region were brought
out by these papers. Tho readers
wero well acquainted with their sub
jects and gavo many practical hints.
This region is tho most productive In
Nobraska, the rainfall is sufficient to
produco wheat yielding forty bushels
to tho acre every season, because of
tho exceptional water holding capacity
of the soil. Tho soil also responds
very quickly to proper tillage at the
right tlmq of year.
Enthusiastic Over West.
Professor Hunt was very cnthuBlas
tic ovor tho future of tho western part
of tho state, saying it Is now a definite
fact that as a crop producer it has as
bright an outlook as eastern Nebraska
over had. He Is In charge of large
experimental enterprise in this coun
try lufrt UnulFthat with proper metb-
outo line crops can bo raised. Ono
hindrance to the development of the
west is tho fuct that the ranchmen
who have large holdings of land, from
flvo to twonty' quarter sections, will
not sell It to bona Hdo settlers for cul
ptm line
tivation. They cannot farm so much
land thcinsolves, so It is practically,
unused. Thoro Is much speculation
also, which cause high prices and re
tard materially tho development of 'th'eT
country, which neods only reasonably
Intelligent farming to make It produce
large yields.
In this country there is a lack of
sympathy with tho work of tho univer
sity, due mostly to tho erroneous sup
position that the region Is of little
valuo, when In reality It merely lacks
development. Professor Hunt proved
a very Interesting talker and showed
much kindness in addressing the club.

gates did and what they saw while at

ious delegates who attended.
PHI ALPHA TAU NOT IN IT.
tlon With New Debating Club.
Memhers of Phi Alpha Tau, the stu
dent debating fraternity, deny that
that organization Js largely back of
tho now debating club to bo organ
ized Wodnosday ovenlng. The fra
ternity men say that several of their
members are nlBo enrolled in the Stu
dents' Debating Glub,' and that moro
will be members of that organization
than of the hew ono. l
The now club will Include both fra-
toritlty and non-fraternity men and
