Physics Dopartmont News.
Mr. Cartwcll. formerly a fellow at
Nebraska, has been appointed Instruct
or In physics at the University of Cin
cinnati, resigning his position In the
national bureau of standards at Wash
ington. D. C.
The department of physics has re
ceived from Berlin a granite spectro
graph, for observing Invisible parts of
the spectrum. The Instrument is of
excellent quality and workmanship,
and will be of considerable aid In the
derartment.
- Mr. S. R. Cook, formerly a fellow In
the department of physics here, pub
lished an article In the London Philo
sophical Magazine a short time ago,
on "The Results of Various Investiga
tions and Experiments In the Depart
ment." The registration in Freshman physics
exceeds all previous records, amounting
to over 200. Sophomore classes are
also especially large, containing over
eighty students. Physics 5 Is smaller
than us.ial. This course has been
changed In some particulars this year,
but remains essentially the same as be
fore, consisting of experiments which
were not performed In preceedlng
courses, together with construction
work.

Relics for Historical Society.
A neAV collection or pioneer relics
was recently added to th Historical So
ciety's collection by Otis Ei AJlis.
An old flintlock gun, used by Rev.
Samuel Allls, who camo to Nebraska
In 1833, as missionary to the Pawnees
Is of special interest. The Indian relics
were found on an anejent Indian vil
lage site immediately across the river
from the mouth of the Platte on the
farm of the lendqr.
The red clay pipe in the collection
was made by Henry Fontanella and
given to the owner, and the cane, a lit
tle frail one. was cut from a grove near
Papllllon. Neb., where Samuel Allls
had a claim in the early 40's.
Union Boys Debate.
The Union Boys will debate In Union
hall tomorrow evening the question:
"Resolved, That England should adopt
Chamberlain's tariff policy." Messrs.
Milek and Schneider will have tho af
firmative and Brubakor and M elicit tire
negative.
Maxwells Debate.
v The MaxwelTS will debate the fol
lowing question tonight: "Resolved,
that illiterate persona should not he
allowed to vote." Theobai and Saw
yer will speak, on the affirmative, Barta
and Mormon upholding tho negative.
All University men are requested to
attend the Y. M. C. A. prayer meeting
Wednesday evening from 7 to 7:30.
Since tho University Y. M. C. A. has
united with tho city Y. M. C. A. in
holding Its Sunday meetings, special
emphasis Bhould be laid on these mid
week prayer meetings.

which he sprays tho plants.

The plant eccology elass Is perform

plants. They are testing, for example,
how much shade a plant can endure.
R. R. Langley. 'Ot, Is this year work
ing for the Horno Correspondence
school, with headquarters at Omaha.
He will be in Bchool again next year.
The pipe organ Is being repaired. A
man is here from the factory to dothe
work and it Is hoped that the organ
will be in working order within a few
days.
The students' exchange Is up and may
be found In University hall on the first
floor, near tho west stairs In the cor
ner by tho window. It will be lettered
within a few days.
Photographs of the individual mem
beis of the football team are on dis
play In tho window of the new pic
ture and engraving establishment at
11th and Q streets.
R. W. Andreason and Miss. Bessie
Reaves were married last Tuesday at
Clc-avenden, la. Both of these young
people will be remembered as popular
members of the athletic and social cir
cles of the University a few years ago.
Miss Palln, who was injured some
time ago, by being thrown from a
huggy. suffering a rather serious in
jury, has sufficiently recovered as to
be able to resume her duties in the
Historical Society rooms.
W. J. Woods returned Tuesday night
from his home In Pawnee, City. A short
time ago he was threatened with an
attack of typhoid fever, which neces
sitated his temporary departure from
school.
Zoology Notes.
Dr. H B. Ward has nearly completed
another article on parasites for Wood's
Hand-book of Medical Science. Mr.
F. A. Prince, tho artist of tho depart
ment, 1ms been illustrating the article.
Dr. H. B. Ward of the zoological de
partment, will leave for York, Thurs
day to assist In laying tho corner stone
for the Y. M. C. A. building at that
place.
Six new directing microscopes and
one very fine compound microscope
hove been added to the zoological lab
oratory. Quito a number of marine speci
mens from the Naples laboratory
have been gotten by the zoological de
partment. The first year zoological class has fin
ished Its work on tho amoeba and are
studying the hydra.
