Frank "Allen , alias Ed Ingles ,
alias Jim Walker , and Horn , and
probablytmany other aliases , made
hisHBscape from the co.unty jail
Jast Thursday night. Bob Robin
son had taken supper to the pris
oners and left the door unlocked
while the prisoners were eating
and stepped into the jailer's room
for a few minutes , when the pris
oner" made his escape , and once
outside the court house yard , de
parted in safety. Sheriff Rosseter
was at Merriman serving sub-
poenaes and upon his return on
the night train was told of the
prisoner's escape and immediately
began wiring over the country ,
offering § 50 reward for his cap
ture. It is surmised that he went
through the country -or up' thru
the reservation.
School Notes.
Last Friday afternoon the. high
school an pupils of the eigth grade
and the Valentine teachers enjoyed
the priyelege of listening to an ad
dress by James Cowan , who by re
quest of Supt. Bettenga , talked on
Robt. Burns and his poetry. Mr.
Cowan , who is a graduate of the
university of Glascow , Scotland , is a
man of broad culture and his ad
dress to the high school which they
listened to with earnest attention
would have been gratefully received
by a college assembly. A number
of guests were present and were en
thusiastic in their appreciation of
the masterly address.
The teachers and pupils oi our
schools were agreeably surprised to
have Prof. G. A. Gregory of the
state department visit the various
rooms all day Wednesday of this
week.
