them guilty , as also several other

They have taken an appeal , , and

i The "most recent evidence of ;
" thi.s lovable disposition on the part
of our kindly old guardian Uncle
Sam is fojjnd ih . the _ case of , Sena-
tor Burkett. "On Wednesday ev-
ening Senator-Burkett , started five
big boxes out of Lincoln by mail ,
headed for his offices in Washing
ton and ; journeying under his sen-
atorial frank- Nobody knows ex
actly what was in the bnxe , but
sufficient glimps was had of their
interior to make it certain that
their contents were not confined to :
documents of official government .
character. In fact , it was learned
that certain personal effects of the
senator , like clothing , were. con-
.tained in the big packages which
were to be transported free.
The really clever fouch in the
business , however , was the tiction
of Senator Burkett in putting a
special ] delivery stamp bif each ,
box. * This insures their prompt
delivery at his office in -Washing
ton , and relieves hm : of the neces-
sity of hiring a di ay to cart them
away from the } postoffice.
, Private citizens cannot send by
mail any packages , that weighs
than 4 and needless
more pouDds-and I
to say they must pay full rates ' on I
every ounce. Yet itVseems that a
United States senator , may send
for nothing five boxes of goods
weighing from 100 to 200 pounds
each. , Further , the private citizen
hears much each year about the "
postoffice deficit. He is informed
that this great government busi
ness does not pay expenses ; , be-
. causepostal rates are too low.
This , however , doesn't appear to
cut any figure when a member of
congress wants to , send a bunch of
freight back to Washington. It
must be carried free. .
Maybe this little graft is one of
: the legitimate perquisites of office ,
' intended to compensate in a small
way for the paltry salary of $7,500
a year with which a senator must
content himself.-Lincoln Star.
( rep ) . ' .
After voting to increase their.
salaries : $2 , 500 a year one would
think that they would willingly
pay freight and mileage them-
selves , but it seems nothing will
satisfy their greed. Everyone
who voted to increase the salaries
should ' be turned out of office . . * at
the next election. Ex.

children and they expect some ,

for a little seeming extravagance
at Christmas time. It doesn't es

many useful articles needed in the
home that you'll be the better off
for buying. Perhaps there are
some things . , you think you can't
afford that would be valuable in
the home , and then you have
your mind called to some foolish ,
extravagant expenditure that you
have made and there was so little
in it , save a transient pleasure.
Go and buy the Flexible Flyer or

recall the foolish expenditure but
this , act may safeguard you against
another such and you'll feel the
