In fact , it was learned that certain personal effects of the senator , like clothing , were. con- .tained in the big packages which were to be transported free. The really clever fouch in the business , however , was the tiction of Senator Burkett in putting a special ] delivery stamp bif each , box. * This insures their prompt delivery at his office in -Washing ton , and relieves hm : of the neces- sity of hiring a di ay to cart them away from the } postoffice. , Private citizens cannot send by mail any packages , that weighs than 4 and needless more pouDds-and I to say they must pay full rates ' on I every ounce. Yet itVseems that a United States senator , may send for nothing five boxes of goods weighing from 100 to 200 pounds each. , Further , the private citizen hears much each year about the " postoffice deficit. He is informed that this great government busi ness does not pay expenses ; , be- . causepostal rates are too low. This , however , doesn't appear to cut any figure when a member of congress wants to , send a bunch of freight back to Washington. It must be carried free. . Maybe this little graft is one of : the legitimate perquisites of office , ' intended to compensate in a small way for the paltry salary of $7,500 a year with which a senator must content himself.-Lincoln Star. ( rep ) . ' . After voting to increase their. salaries : $2 , 500 a year one would think that they would willingly pay freight and mileage them- selves , but it seems nothing will satisfy their greed.
