Principal of Cody Schools. i Having y duly qualified , I desire to announce myself a candidate I ' nomination to the office of sup- erintendent of public instruction , ! of . I was two years principal of the Cody school and one year principal of the Crookston school. I changed last i year because Crookston is nearer . / to our homestead. I have been .engaged in. school work for ten i years. If elected will fulfill the duties of the office to the best of my ability. Respectfully , , D. F. STORY. ! - I , - Shoot Him on the Spot. i We have noticed , and so have you : , some one with a knife cutting away at anything he .happens to be near enough to cut , or hacking with the point of the blade into a good chair or buggy seat , and any I' ' piece of furniture seems to be none too good upon which to scratch a ll match. These people are not de- generates. They don't know any better , or they haven't been taught , , any better , -and , beside this , they , have a destructive spirit and mean 1 no good to anyone but themselves. . ' i : . They need watching and frequent j ' admonishing to keep them from destroying something valuable to n 1 0 someone else. There is yet a worse class of people than these. They would poison the water or food that you { and all mankind have to eat and . i - drink by putting filth into it. Our city water supply comes from an open reservoir down be- j low the Gilman mill dam and is ; J supplied by numerous springs and lc i 14 I flowing wells : The water is pure 3 ' li E I and of splendid quality there as it ' II flows out of the earth. It makes f. I but a short circuit up town to our f hydrant but comes out in such a ' ! filthy condition that it is little bet- 1 1 I . . These filth generators kill more people than do rattle snakes. If our people will take an inter- est in cleaner and better water and I act earnestly to better our water supply we can have better water. If these filth generators cannot be kept away. from the source of our supply they should be handled according to law as a lesson to the rising generation , that a public drinking place is a sacred place and .that the greatest caution must be observed lest the waters be con- taminated. i Now , some old croaker may en- courage the boys ' in this deviltry by sneering at it , or denouncing this article > : Such a person is an enemy to the public safety and should be punished as an example to others. We can think of no punishment more suitable than a cage in some animal show , but Campbell Brothers wouldn't have such a degenerate. - In friendly spirit let everyone try to do something for better water to drink , or lend assistance to punish some guilty offender. The Cheerful Rain. Long time ago upon the farm , I , then a boy , could see no harm In laying off , for there's a charm When e'er it rains. Everybody : just stoppcd work , Of course they didn't want to shirk ; , But home to shelter , like a turk , I When e'er it rained. Sometimes the neighbor boys dropped in To spend the time 'twould make you grin To see us eating din - Nor , when it rained. Wo gathered round the kitchen lire , Hadn't then the telephone wire , But tellin' stories we'd . not tire , When e'er It rained. I like to stop yet when I may , To sit around , though old and gray , And take a sort of holiday \ When e'er it rains. . I like to see the cheerful rain Falling on the ripening grain ; . It makes me think of youth again , To see it rain. In fancy now I see it sputter , Falling fast down in ttie gutter ; So I've watched through the shutter. " lll'n it rained. Oft It spoiled a Sunday trip , When the thunder rolled ca-/.ip , And the clouds would seem to tip , Lord , how it rallied. Soaking wet and getting wetter , In the mud knee deep or better ; Yes I've been there , don't forgettcr , When it rained. i But these sprinkle , dri///le , droppin , Rains a week without a stopping , And ill walking , such a slopping When it rains. Yes ; , we say we like to slumber , And the hours go without number ! , And our head is getting dumber \ \ ' lll'n it rains. Fitter , patter falls the water- ! And I guess you think I oughter Stop this "Tit In' for a quarter . Let it rain. Conl missioners' Proceed = ings. Valentine , Neb. , June 25 , ' 09. Board met as per adjournment.
