up her residence on her homestead

John Bothwell was arrested by Sher
iff Layport and brought to fown last

Jas E Thackrey and his brother
John E and their wives started for a
drive overland to the Black Hills and
Bad lands Monday intending to be
gone three or four weeks
Miss Esther Smith who has been
cook at the Donoher Hotel for the
past five years went out home with
her father Jas Smith Tuesday for
a rest and to cheer up her parents by
her presence
A party consisting of Bon Lonff
land A D Brown Arthur Rles Lew
Hollister and a gentleman from Iowa
whose name we did not learn went
fishing at Hackberry Lake Sunday
and beside having a good time caught
a lot of fish
J B Sweeney of Pullman spent
seyeral days in town during the past
week and tells us they are doinq nice
ly out at the ranch losing very few
stock during the past winter or calves
during the spring They now have
over 200 calves
Miss Inez Pettycrew completed her
term of school at Georgia and last
Monday returned to Valentine Miss
Pettycrew will find a hearty welcome
by her friends here who have missed
her during her absence

the district court of thisjpunty con
vened here Monday with Judge James
J Harrington of ONeill presiding
There are 129 civil cases on the docket
and for the first time In years there
is not a criminal case on the docket
The most interesting case for trial is
that exf Mr Knight of the National
hank of thig place against the Thomp
son brothers of Lake Side who are
being sued by Mr Knight because I
the Thompsons as it is alleged used
his name in connection with the Lake
Side lottery without his authority It
will be remembered that the Thomp
sons raffled their ranch which they
claimed was worth about 830000 by
selling tickets at SI per ticket and
represented that the drawing was to j
take place under several well known
and reliable business men of Alliance
After it is said about 2000 tickets
were disposed of the Thompsons
raffled the ranch at Lake Side with
out any of the parties frm Alliance

front of the Stock Exchange this
week and another coat of paint added
to the front of the building
Fred E Whitney who has been
working on the Democrat during the
pastjtwo months has quit and will
probably go back to Newport
Wm Erickson of Kennedy came to
Valentine Monday on business and
said in a talk with the editor that he
is getting along nicely but has lots of
work and is very busy
June 1st Gov Savage appointed ten
delegates to represent Nebraska at
the Trans Mississippi commercial con
gress to be held at Cripple Creek on
July 16th among them being Charles
Cornell of Valentine
It is td he regretted that our hotels
wefe so crowded upon the arrival of
the7 Editors that there was scarce
sleeping room to be had and not until
new beds were prepared could they
all enjoy the quietude of slumber on
Friday night
Henry Stetter has put in a large
plate glass Back Bar that extends to
the ceiling of the Palace saloon A
composition cork carpet has been
placed upon the iloor and the outside
is receiving a second coat of paint

greatly adds to the beauty of the
Palace saloon
Geo Tracewell has been doing a
Land Office business in horses of late
Hegold a team to Henry Sauerwine
about two weeks ago for 175 Lately
George purchased the entire herd of
horses belonging to AlexCharbonneau
and already has sold two teams of
them one to Dell Sherman the other
to Joe Burleigh He still has 46 head
of good horses that are all sizes and
right ages to work and will sell them
broken or unbroken for reasonable
prices

have had the pleasure of witnessing
