K First cavalry who shot his com rade James Goldbergon the morning of March 12 at a questionable resort east of town was held Tuesday be fore Judge Towne The evidence in tba case was very meager but the story is something like this A party of soldiers visited the re sort and one of them started to en ter a room which was occupied by the defendant who warned him to keep out on peril ol his life Shortly after defendant fired a bullet through the partition which struck Ed Reader in the leg inflicting a slight wound This angered the boys and Goldberg started for defendants room al though warned by his fellows to keep away and was shot in the breast the bullet ranging up to the shoulder Goldberg fell to the floor and during the excitement which followed Mc Lester escaped The balance of the story has been told in these columns Defendant did not introduce any evidence and was bound over to dis trict court charged with shooting with intent to kill A strenuous effort is being made to hush up the affair as one or two more prominent people are concerned and what the outcome will be it is hard to predict A New Water Ordinance In another column will be found Ordinance No 82passed by the board of trustees at their last meeting which takes the place of all water ordinances heretotore in force in this village The water rates are there expressed at so much per 100 cubic feet and for the convenience of our readers we give the following explan ation A cubic foot of water contains approximately seven and one half gallons Hereafter all consumers must pay a water tax or maintain ance fee of 2 per quarter for their water connection In return for this the consumer is allowed to use 3750 gallons of water If he uses more than this amount in any tone quarter he shall pay for the excess at the rate of 1i cents for each 750 gallons or 1 cent per 100 gallons This cer tainly is cheap enough and yet it is figured that at this rate those who use sprinklers will pay more than they did under the old flat rate while those who use water for house pur poses alone pay 2 per yeartless Our Governments Gratitude Elmer Dillon died at Fort Niobrara last Friday and was buried Saturday afternoon the Rev Fr Lechleitner conducting the services Elmer left here with the Twelfth Infantry and was discharged from the service in the Philippines on account of his health He returned a com plete wreck and until recentfy was unable to enter the government hos pital on account of red tape His funeral expenses were paid by private subscription Thus it is that our great government cares for its heroes It is too busy assimilating Filipinos to care for those who die on account of their loyalty to the flag I Case of Appendicitis Alonzo Heath of Cody has been ill for some time and on Tuesday of this week
