The editor spent Saturday and Sun
day of last week in the bosom of his
famil } ' at Longpine. Prospects are
very good now for his wife's speedy
return home.
Faddis and Steadman shipped the
cattle mentioned in this paper as hav
ing been sold to Missouri parties sev
eral weeks ago from Woodlake , the
first of the week , after holding them
there several days.
The woman's suil'rage convention
which was held here yescerday'and
the day before , attracted consider
able attention , but so far as we know
no new arguments were presented
and no converts made.
C. F. Martin has accepted a position
in this oilice and will soon blossom out
into a lull fledged printer. Clarence
and the editor have long been like
brothers , but this is the first time we
have ever had the opportunity of
'bossing" him.
W. C. English , the Hospe piano
man , was in town last week , but not
for the purpose of selling pianos. If
all reports are true after one of his
visits here in the near future there
will be a vacancy in the force of te-
male assistants at Rosebud.
W. G. Ballard was in from his Dewy
Lake ranch the first of the week. Lot
of republicans are claiming that
"Bill' ' has foresworn his allegiance
to the democratic party , but we. must
confess that we were unable to see
any signs of backsliding while he was
in town.
Dr. Ely , he who would like to be
elected regent of the state univer
sity on the republican ticket , and
who shamelessly mocked the old sol
diers at Bassett , made several
speeches in this county during the
past week. We wish the republicans
would import a few more speakers of
his caliber.
H. P. McKnight sold his herd of
cattle at public sale at his ranch south
of Bassett on Tuesday of this week.
Altnough the crowd present was not
large , the buyers weie there and
most excellent prices prevailed. P.
Peterson bought sixty-six head of two
3ear old heifers at a cost of 3 ; " > .oO per
head. The Doctor expressed himself
as much pleased with the result of
the sale. Longpine Journal.
At Woodlake last nignt Harrington
had a lousing meeting , the school
house being crowded , and a large
numoer standing in the hall. The
meeting was also addressed by Judge
Selah and Mrs. Crawford , the latter
making an especially good impres
sion. If the people only knew these
two candidates their majorities would
be larger.

It is explained at last. Thackrey is
the man who put the county on a cash
basis. The increase in the amount and
value of taxable property had nothing
to do with it ; Sullivan's six 3ears labor
for economy had nothing to do with it ;
"McKmley prosperity' ' had nothing to
do with it ; the two orders of the county
commissioneis to the treasurer forcing
him to do his duty had nothing to do
with it Oh , no ; Thackrey did it all
himself. Thackrey , the man who sent
to Kansas for his office assistants , and
like Mutz kept the 11101103" in the
family ; Thackrey , who while putting
the county on a cash basis issued circu-
lais libeling his brother officials and at
tacking the county's credit ; Thackrey ,
who rather than employ carpenters did
his own work and neglected his office
duties : the man who was unable to get ,
out more than on financial statement ;
a year , and couldn't do that without assistance - j
sistance ; the man who deliberately ig
nored his superior's orders ; the man to
whom many citizens paid taxes , and a
couple of weeks later received duns for
the same ; Thackrey is the man who did
it , and did it all alone.

The republicans went 'into ecsta
sies because they thought they had
unexpectedly found n pure candidate
for supreme judge. They claimed they
had a candidate without a flaw a-poli-
tician of purest ray serene a genuine
anti-monopolist--a hater of railroad
influence. But , alas , their hopes are
already blasted. They said he was too
dignified to enter into a scramble for
office : vet he is already makingpoli
tical speeches and scramblng- hard
as anybody. They said he was beaten
for the nomination in 3889 because he
was opposed to railroad domination ,
and now it turns out that he was laid
on the shelf because he
was a prohi-
bitionst. They said he was too pure
to behold iniquity , and then he is
proven by the -
leading- official organ
of the party to be the subservient tool
of monopolies. The > > said that he had
been blameless in office , and then ti
comes out that he was the first of the
supreme judges to increase his own
aslary by pensioning his wife and son
on the state treasury under the pre
tense that said wife and son were
SiS6 ? , ste ° * rraPhers. The whole
state has been denouncing the su
preme judges for nepotism in placin
their relatives on the
pav-roll , and
now it appears that M. B. Reese is
the very man who
taught them this
disgraceful trick. Keese wSs no

that shady way of recouping their
finances if Reese hadn't taught them

The Aiusworth Journal calls the old
soldier who wrote the letter in last
week's paper -camp follower , " and
without consulting Dr. Ely says the
charges contained in the letter are un
true. This is one of Burleigh's bluffs ,
and we can prove the truth of the let
ter by half a dozen , or a score of affi
davits if necessary.
