county in mass convention assembled Saturday April 18 li We the Deinrcrits or Cherry county in mass convention aniblertdo realhra our alleciance to the princhKi of the Democratic party as formulated b ieflcrson and exemplified by the illustrious line of his successors in Democratic leadership from Madison to Cleveland We still deuenhee the Republican doctrine ol protection as -a fraud a robbery of the great inaierjty of the American people for the benefit of the few Wc still adhere to and maintain the Democratic doctrine of a tariff for revenue only We believe the interests of the masses of our population will be best conserved by the collection of such taxes as shall -be limited to the necessities oE the government honestly and economically -administered We express our with in the time honored doc trine or the Democratic pattyad to international trade rclations an interchange by which the countries participating Shall -enjoy reciprocal advantages We denounce the sham reciprocity scheme of the Republicans which juggles with the peoples -desire for lreer -exchanges by pre teHding to establish closer relations while en acting prohibitive tarjll taxes against those countries ofihe worli that stand ready to take ourentire surplus of products in exchange for xomrifodities whigh are necessaries and comforts of life among our ownpeople Appreciating the condition ef the public nrirtu with reference to the -financial policy of this country and recognizing the importance of -a ipronersolution of this question we unhesitat ingly express our unalterableopposition to the free and unlimited coinage of Silver except by intflrnatlbnil agreement and until shell ment can be procured we favor the present standard of Value We denounce the action of 1 r j j A lew wcfus ago tne nuiKers 01 w plate formed a combination to raise te prices of their goods The price for f C 14x20 coke tins was fixed At 050 Alter the combination wai effected ft was agreed that the- wages should berecTud As a justificatidn of the increase of price ior their gods said at the rejecting the improved tone of business arising from the belief thatthe countcy is ap proaching an eradf safe government it is mterestingtbnote that the asso ciation throughits executive commit tee has -already decided on mating a further advance in prices Asa McKinley campaign dodge the bluff was a good one altfeough some what aged but it was very clumsily managed The anticipation that Mc- inley will be elected and a protec tive tariff placed on tin two years or more hence causes the combine to raise the price of their goods but at the same time the trust saw an imper ative necessity for reducing wages By the open confession of their organ the gentlemauwho make up the combine were acting more with an eye of pro ducing favorable effect on McKinleys chances than any necessity for a rise in prices the intention being probably to convey to the public the impression that higher prices for tin meant higher wages forJthevworkman But alas for discretion when greed comes in The public insisted on seeing the wage re duction everytime attention was call ed to the revival of prices and from the happenings of the past tew days it is evident that the trust realizes its blunder It is -also probable that a realization of the blunder took place soon after a consultation was had with the republican campaign management for otherwise it is imposible to account for the trusts late action when its de clarations of last May are remembered At that time foreign tin was selling at 380 and it was announced tfchat a better quality of domestic tin was to be had -at 350 The condition of the business was announced as tip top and the boast freely made that the Welch article had been driven from the American market Today barely six weeks later it -is announced that tin plate manufactories of the coun try will shut down throwing 25000 men out of employment Possibly the trust has been labored with on the folly ofHaeing prosperous under a democratic administration It is not consistent with republican theory for manufacturers to pay divi dends unless they have some protec tion But what has become of the great anticipation department of the republican campaign The country went to smash we werciold in anti cipation of what the democrats were going to do nearly two years later but here we have the McKinleyites telling us that their doctrine will win this year and not a single industry is reviving in anticipation thereof Sioux City Tribune State Corbetts re nomination was assured because of the up-to-date set of business men and know the value of advertising They are not ashamed of what they have to offer and are con stantly adding new bargains which are popular and competitive therefore they are persistent advertisers Stu art Ledger Eree silver democrats speak glibly of how all the populists of the United States will support the nomineeof the Chicago convention if he stands on a 16 to 1 platform but they evidently dont realize the exact condition of affairs Although they say that the free coinage of silver will make one dollar equal to every other dollar the populists dont support that idea Witness the following from the Mis souri World The free coinage of silver advocates in the democratic party with few ex ceptions do not recognize the fact that money is -created solely by law and insist thatall paper money should beredeemed inCoin This is not the doctrine of the peoples party which demands that all money shall beXmade equal A party advocating the re demption of one dollar by is not in favor of making alldbllars equal MCKINLETS PROGRESS The republican candidate is a rbon only on the tariff In regard to the currency he has shown a capacity to forget things that it was inconven ient to remember and to learn things that were indispensible to his success Atfew years ago he voted for free silver coinage A little later he voted to coin not less thah 2000000 nf more than 4000000 a month Still more recently he voted to have the Government touy practically the entire silver product of the country and issue Treasury notes1 against it In Eebuary last he declared for a dollar as untarnished as the flag In the eyes of -Bland and Teller a bright new silver dollar 50 per cent flat just meets this definition In the Ohio platform he favored dollars of pmial irmrphfloinfl1 sfnrl dpht navincr O - j a power dollars sv Our present gold and silver have this power at home Pressed for a more definite expression the candidate said we must have full dollars As this was not satisfactory he said in his speech to the Notifica tion Committee that our money must not ODly be current at its full face value at home but it must be counted at par in any and every commercial centre of the globe It is perhaps a little uncertain whether Mr McKin would havethis done by comforming all our coinage to tne worlds standard or enforce his must at the mouths of our cannon or our orators jBht his unqualified approval of the St Louis platform gives ground for the hope that he will yet declare in plain terms his opposition to the free and independent coinage of silver It has not failed of observation however that Mr McKinley has not yet done this or mentioned the gold standard- New York World v i v t J j y JJr WTIt i A qifjss W Are women moro patriotic lhan men That is the question that has beon bothering Tni Democrat for some time past At the Eourth of July celebration in this city last Saturday the dearth of men in the bowery dur ing the exercises tvas especially nonce able Women were in numbers and the scene was a gay one but the men stood outside the range of the speak ers voice or on the street corners sav ing the country by discussing the free silver question the tariff enigma or the crop prospects The Fourth of July is the one especial day set apart f r a display of patriotism and that this display should be made principal ly by women is to say the least re markable Again at school commencements women always predominate in the number who are present to witness the progress of their offspring while man proud man with hia superior intelli gence his greater wisdom and more noble attributes contents him self by sarcastic references to the sweet girl graduates and her essays on the past present and future Why should things be thus and how long will man continue to declare himself womans superior intellectually as well as physically if he does not mend his ways and take more interest in affairs spiritual and intellectual as well as temporal and physical Men call their fellows effeminate if they show emotion or interest them selves in the affairs which are usually included in womans sphere but to the mind of The Democrat ib is far more noble to be tender kind and true than to be harsh cruel and decep tive As a rule men are all the latter but it is their teaching that makes them so not their natural inclination The fear of ridicule the dislike of smiles at their benefit combine to make them unnatural Man was in tended to be womans superior but the intention has been misconstrued and perverted until now guaged by the la W of nature and natures God he is rapidly becoming her inferior PS We are not in favor of wom ans rights as the term Is generally understood The St Paul Dispatch is a strong le publican paper but it evidently is sick ofthe slobber being indulged iin over McKinley In its issue of July 4 it has this editorial It would bei splen did idea if those who are managing the campaign of ex Governor McKin ley couldifiud some means or Other to reduce the number of delegations of all kinds that are daily visiting Can ton to pay their respects as they repre sent it to the candidate of the republi can party Not a day passes but half a dozen and more delegations of one kind or another and representing all manner of associations make pilgrim ages to the home of the republican candidate for the presidency One day last week four or five hun dred lawyers from Pittsburg called up on him Another day it was several nundred ministers who went a lone distance to shake hands with him At another time it is a thousand -or two operatives in the various mills and factories of Ohio and of adjoining states In very many instances it is mere curiosity and to say that they have shaken hands with the future president of the United States In other instances there are axestcgrind though this is slenderly veiled through a programme adroitly prepared After all what does it amount to in making the nomination of the convention ef fective by votes at the polls The Omaha World Heraid is after Senator Thurston with a sharp stick and is prodding Jiim quite heartily on his- change of front on the silver ques tion Senator Thurstons conversion to the gold standard is of so recent date like McKinleys that -it arouses suspicion to see him so strenuously in favor of it Judge Westover went east Tuesday morning He will visit Lincoln and Omaha then go to Pennsylvania to at tend to some equity work for his brothers-in-law the Gealys of -Gordon On his return he expects to stop at White water Wis to deliver an address on the money question Rushville Stan dard The people of Johnstown Ainswoth and vicinity have petitioned the direc tors of the Golden Irrigation District to revise the boundaries and the combined endorsement of the pop ulists and free silver people it is said the republicans wont even know tbey tried to elect a president this year The proposition -sounds very nice and all that but Moses Plunkett Kinkaid got out of the race for congress in a hurry and almost before any of the politicians in northwest Nebraska knew where he was at had safely secured the nomina tion for provisional supreme judge It is currently reported that Judge Kin kaid was afraid to run for congress on a gold platform consequently coquett ed with the supreme judgeship to avoid having to stump the district with a goodchance for defeat after a hard summers work Be that as it may his action has not made him many friends in this part of the state He had been in the race for congress so long thathisjnomination was consi dered a sure thing His candidacy at the state convention had the effect of shelving Geo A Eckles of Chadron who thought the nomination for aud itor was within his grasp and caused Alfred Bartow who wanted to be su preme judge if Eckles lost the aud itors place to be sat down on very hard Aflof this is not conducive to the most perfect harmony in the re publican ranks and some of Judge Kinkaids former friends may -knife him on election day A MYSTERV STOR3T Mystery stories have become regu lar features of the great metropolitan papers and in order to keep up with to solve it I have been trying to define pride What is pride any how There are so many things that we call pride which cannot possibly pass muster as the real article Again Ave have been taught all our lives that nothing that is false can be real and yet we are day by day brought in con tact with an existing condition which Ave denominate false pride Her is a paradox surely There is pride of birth pride of being pride of in telligence and pride of a thou sand of other things of about equal importance but the grouping of them all brings me back to the original question What is pride To be proud one must have something to be proud of and hence pride is appreciation and it is only when that sense of ap preciation is well directed- that it pos sesses the ring of quality When men and neglect duties through some mistaken sentiment of possible criticism or of probable self-humiliation real or fancied the sentiment which actuates them or rather which stands in the way o their activity is not pride it is conceit I do not be lieve that pride cam be qualified Jt seems to me that itmustbe as individual as a mountain or a tree and that its ex istence is dependent solely upon the honest worth of the person in whom it dwells My observation has given me the conviction that no matter how seriously men and women of the world deceive others the- invariably deceive them selves more and the cause of this is too frequently through the mistaken notion of pride We never deceive others until we first deceive ourselves It would not appear necessary to mis represent anything to a second or third person if it were not that we want to convince ourselves that the misrepresentation is the result of some thing which we should have accom plished or which we may yet do and here we are influenced by that quality of conceit which dreads criticism and which is willing to numiliate itself for a word or two of praise It is alwavs self deception first N Y Kecorder Peoples Independent
