last Sunday as Memorial Day in a very fitting man ner Rev O L Ramsey preached an excellent memorial sermon at the L J3 churqh which was attended by the A- 0 TJ W and Degree of Honor in a body -the members of the orders marching to the church from the lodge room at 11 oclock the procession be ing headed by a band of ten pieces from Fort Niobrara The band rend ered several selections at the church and after the senices the members of the lodges and many citizens marched to the cemetry Avhere the grave of Wm Stilwell the only workman bur ied here was decorated with flowers Merchants Andrews commander of Fort Niobrara recently ordered that one day of each month should be setapait as Field Day by the 12th in fantry the regiment now stationed at the post the events to be participated in by enlisted men only Small prizes were to be given to the -winners of events and a silk championship pen nrtnt goes to the company having the most points after each days exercises Five points are counted for every first prize three for second and one for third The pennant is to be held by the winning company until won by some other company on a subsequent Fiflld Da This order of the Colonel is a good one and promises to awaken much interest in athletic sports among the men May 4th was aunounced as the date ot the first Field Day and accordingly a large number of citizens visited the post to witness the sports which were as good as could be desired Through the courtesy of Col Andrews and Lieut McCarthy we are enabled to give the following summary of the events and winners of distributed to winners and the hope of winning these prizes added enthusiasm to the contestants Col Andrews feels very much grati fied at the result of his experiment and is already planning for the next Field Day The afternoon was taken up by a ball game between men of Company E and the Post nine and was Avon by Company E on a score of 9 to 5 after a hard fought battle the score being even until the last half of the 8th ining The baud boys gave a dance at the Post Hall in the evening Avhich was a very delightful affair and largely at tended by citizens outside the post SCHOOL COLUMN EDITORS j
