Livestock Markets Protest USDA's 'Dual Grading' The recently announced deci sion of the United States Depart ment of Agriculture to continue their dual grading program on a "modified basis" drew sharp criticism from the River Markets Group. The group is comprised of the Siouk Fairs. Sioux City, O maha, St. Joseph, Kansas City and St. Louis central public market. Hugh Mactier, a commission man on the Omaha livestock market and current vice-chairman of the Group, urged the de partment to reconsider their at tempts to make this totally un popular program compulsory. "Dual grading was offered during a full one year trial per iod, with only a very slight In terest shown for the service by the meat Industry," said Mactier. "This should provide coacluslve proof, he continued, "of the program's failure to meet the needs of the Industry, even on an optional basis. "The River Markets Group cannot condone, as being in the best interests of the nation's livestork producers, any attempt to enforce the 'cutabillty' con cept in Federal meat grading. We can do nothing but join the meat packers, retailers and pro ducers alike In criticising this unwanted grading service." Mactier continued, "If the De partment of Agriculture wants to be of real service to American agriculture, they should attempt to come up with a workable plan to sharply reduce the Imparts of meat from foreign countries." Mactier Indicated that the River Markets Group would support a sound program aimed In thdt di rection.
