Latex Sprays Can Cut Needle Drop from Trees LINCOLN Have you had trouble with spruce trees losing their needles before the Christ mas season? lLso, this need not be a prob lem. Scientists have proved that latex-based spre.ys are effective In preventing needle drop from spruce trees, says nan loercn, University of Nebraska Exten sion forester. "Fir and nine trees do not pre- ; sent the problem of needle drop as they naturally retain needles well," Loerch points out. In an Ohio test, spruce trees were covered with a latex-based spray. The trees were kept for a week out of doors and then put Into a warm room. They were tested 4 days and 7 days later, respectively, by dropping 18 Inches onto a table top. Results show that the unsprayed trees had lost all their needles after II days. The latex-sprayed trees had lost very few needles by the end of the test. "The increased needle reten tion on trees sprayed with latex seemed to result from two fac tors, '. Loerch reports. "In the first place, needles on the sprayed trees contained twice as much moisture as those on the unsprayed trees. Secondly, the latex seemed to form a contin uous film over the needles gluing each needle in place. . TWIN TRICKS CilRI.
