Journal Want Ads Pay - Mr. Wehrbein (Continued from Page One) At this moment the car gave a lurch and started rolling down the hill. The monstrosity slowly picked up speed, but was quick ly stopped by a large oak tree. The car gave a quiver, then fell apart with a crash like everybody in town dropping their garbage-can lid at ' the same time. At this Tim let out a terrific war whoop, (that would scare Geromlno) and jumped Into the air. "It works!" he yelled, "It works!" "Yes, I suppose it does, but what does it do?" asked Julie. "What does it do?" he said, "What does it do?" "It's an automatic brake releaser, that's what it doerWoes. You turn a switch and the brakes automat ically release." "What do you mean automat ically release." "What do you mean automatic if you have to turn a switch?" asked Kit inquisitively. "You've heard your mother speak of automatic defrosters?'' snapped Tim. Kit smiled meekly. "I brought you your mail, Tim," said Julie, "there's Just some letters." Tim scanned the first three, "Junk mail," he murmured, and tossed them over his shoul der. "Oh boy! it's come," he yelled, picking up the last let ter. He ripped open the envel ope, pulled a sheet of dog-eared paper out, and started to read it. "Finally success!" he shouted when he had finished. "A fellow Inventor, Charles Lockwood, is coming from Springfield to see my inventions. I wonder where he heard about them?" "Heard ABOUT them," whis pered Kit, "he probably could hear them on a still day. The next day a pile of fenders, broken wind-shields, hubcaps, and steering wheels pulled up to the Trumbell home. The engine coughed twice, spit, and died. Mr. Lockwood started to climt out, but the toe of his right shoe caught on the threshold, and he fell head-long onto the grass. Mr. Lockwood grumbled and picked himself up. He walked back to the trunk of the car and stuck his hand between two crumbled pieces of metal that . ' had somehow been assembled on the pile of junk. He started " pulling and all at once, what ever it was, let go. Mr. Lock wood staggered back, tripped on a tree limb, and fell quite solidly to the sidewalk. Mr. Lockwood . picked himself up slowly and looked into his hand, there was . the truck handle. "Oh well," he sighed, and , , threw it into the heap. , After showing Mr. Lockwood his laboratory, Timothy hunted . up all his inventions and showed them to Mr. Lockwood. '" "It you want to take them with you, Mr. Lockwood, I'd be ; '. happy to let you have them," said Timothy. "Really?" cried Mr. Lock wood, "Oh, thank you, thank you. They'll be very helpful ln my work. Very useful. I realljr appreciate this, Mr. Trumbell. " Timothy just smiled anc. swelled his chest. After supper, (Mr. Lockwood was a VERY good eater) Mr. Lockwood, with the inventions piled into the car. After several -goodby's had been exchanged -Mr. Lockwood pushed the start-" er. Nothing happened. He tried -again. Nothing. Again. Same thing. Mr. Lock wood climbed out J and peered under the hood. He pulled, and he screwed, and he jerked. Finally he got It run ning. As he put his tools into the trunk, the car backfired, jumped, and started high-balling down the street. Mr. Lockwood looked up, gasped, and ran after It. As the car made a detour through Mrs. O'Casey's garden, a large sign on the truck lid proudly proclaimed: C. LOCK WOOD, JUNK DEALER. "Junk dealer," wailed Tim othy, "junk dealer, I thought he was an inventor." He jumped up and shot out like a scared rab bit. As the sun sank slowly Into the west, you could still see the fig ures cf'two men chasing some thing wtrther. But don't worrv they'll catch it, unless, unless by gosh! Yes! Mr. Lockwood i invented perpetual motion! 1 if .,.V.il i'ii-iii
