I., Helnrlch of the Platts inn nth Woman's Club and Mrs. Hugh Slander Jr., of the Platts niou'h Civic Club, attended the Trt-Coimtv Work Shop of First District NFWC at Douglas on Monday. The meeting was held in the Methodist Church and some 40 members, representing clubs from Cass, Otoe and Lan caster counties registered de spile the rainstorms which were e ncountered enroute. Mrs. Calvin Sterns, Raymond, president of First District pre sided Her welcoming thought was "Progress Is the activity of today and' the assurance of to morrow." (Emerson). Mrs Harry Hust, District Parliamen tarian, of Lincoln opened the session with tips on parliamen tary procedure, stating that "parliamentary law is simply the courteous manner of con ducting a meeting." The grouo heard news from the County Presidents, and Mrs. Fred C. Naber, Syracuse, sec ond vice president of the district, introduced the District Chair men, who spoke on their particu lar departments, which included American Resources and Con servation, Mrs. Alvin Finke, Syracuse; Education ESO and Library, Miss Thelma Markey, Walton; Art, Penny Art and Crafts, Mrs. Martin Nissen, Ray mond; Home Religion and Fam ily Living, Mrs. Carl Georges, Shubert; Citizenship Legislation and Indian Affairs, Mrs. Ken neth McDonnell, Greenwood; National Defense, Safety, Wel fare, Health and Gerantology Mrs. Ernest Overton, Nebraska City Historian is Mrs. Landis Hulla, Sterling. Mrs. Harold Hrugman, Douglas, newly ap pointed District director of Jun iors was heard as was the state Director Mrs. Don Kolterman of Seward. A panel discussion on Leadership proved most inter esting. Following the luncheon at noon, Miss Dorothy Bauss, dis trict, treasurer from Bennet, talked on "Dollars and Sense" Mrs. Sterns used the topic "What's New for '62" stressing the five projects of the NFWC on the district and local level they are CARE (also a GFWC project); Penny Art, Interna- Union Alumni Banquet Draws Attendanc of 80 UNION (Special) The Union School Alumni Banquet was held at the Legion Hall May 26. This was the 50th anniversary of this organization. Two members of the 1912 class present were Vance Harris of Independence, Mo., and Mary Becker of Union. Melvin Todd Sr. acted as mas ter of ceremonies and used ag riculture as the topic of his speech. New officers elected were President Mrs. Gail Hoback, vice president Mrs. Verna Pol lard, Secretary-treasurer Don Wolfe and publicity chairmer. Mrs. Jim Burbee and Mrs. Nellie Kriefels. The association presented gifts to the two members of the 1912 class. Vance Harris had a copy of the program of the first com mencement which he read. Tom Wolfe led singing of fa vorite songs. Miss Mary Nichols, Brock first vice president, gave some program planning aids for the coming club year; and Mrs. Raymond Wellensick, third vice president. Cook, evaluated the days session with her closing report, following a "buzz ses slon" in which all participated Mrs. Arthur Oestman, Auburn is District Secretary. Mrs. Sterns stressed the state project of Mrs. George Mechling of Lincoln, newly elected presi dent of NFWC as being in line with the state theme of "Ac tion" Leadership, Alcoholism and the Promotion of Nebraska through touristism. Also the use of the Nebraska State flag at all meetings along with the Amer lean Flag. Mrs. Robert Martens, Atkln son, Nebraska, has been named State Treasurer. Dates to remember are Coun ty convention Oct. 4 at Douglas; District Convention Falls City, Oct. 29. This is to be an all day meeting with an evening ban quet. The state convention is sched uled to be held in Lincoln April 3-5. Elm wood Churches ELMWOOD (Special) Church news: Christian their choir sang Memorial Day songs. Rev. Bav 1s sermon title was "Our Hope." The Union Bible School began Monday, May 28, and closes June 8. Rev. Bavis is the direc tor and informs us that he ex pects to show slides the eve ning of June 8 as part of the closing program. The funeral services for Wm. Schick were held here on May 28th. Evangelical United Brethren The Junior choir sang; Rev. Schroeder's sermon title was "Behold Making all Things New." A Memorial roll call was held for Mrs. Edward Rosenow, Mr. Henry Vogt and Mr. Wil liam Holke. Bible school began May 28. Catholic The 2 sisters are coming next Sunday to begin the 2 weeks of teaching begin ning June 3. There will be a picnic held at the park on June 10. First Friday mass will be at 8 p.m. Methodist The Senior choir sang as their special "Father Almighty." Rev. Hansen's ser mon was titled "Stewardship ot Soil." Of VFW District Several members of the Vet erans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliary attended the District 6 Convention of the VFW held at Falls City, May 27. Jack Barnard was elected Senior Vice Commander by the VFW. Mrs. Lloyd Fitch and Mrs. A. C. McLean were appointed color bearers by the Auxiliaiy. The Department Fall Confer ence will also be held in Falls City. Reports were given of the act ivities of the past several months. The Depariment Convention will be held in Norfolk in June. Mrs. McLean and Mrs. Fitch presented a program honoring the retiring district president Mrs. Van Melune; . by naming her The' distr'ot Mother of the Year in the VFW program. Mrs. Fitch presented her the past president's pin, and in turn Mrs. Meluney presented her of ficers with gifts. Attending from Plattsmouth were Mr. and Mrs, Lloyd Fitch, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Graduation Party SOUTH ASHLAND (Special) Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ueberrbein were hosts at a graduation party Wednesday evening after the commencement service at the Ashland School. They were honoring their son Lyle who was one of a class of 45 to graduate. Lyle was recog nized for his four years of per fect attendance and always being on time . Guests at the Ueberrbein home were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Feist of Leshara, Mr. and Mrs. Orvllle Hoke of Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. John Cockerlll, Mr. and Mrs Herbert Bundy, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bundy of Gretna. Visiting Mother Breaks Knee Cap Mrs. Carl Frecburg of Spen cer, la., mother of Herb Free burg of this city, was attending graduation at Tarkio College wnere her grandson Don Free borg was among the graduates Monday morning when she fell and broke her knee cap. She was taken l-: St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, and is now in room 264. Here as guests in the Freeburg heme and visiting with Mrs. Freeburg at the hospital are Miss Ruth Freeburg and Mrs. Lena Johnson, daughters, both of Spencer, Iowa Also here are Ralph Cowan and daughter Jane of Caiif., and Mrs. Ray Hancey of Phoenix, Ariz. Mrs. Walter Mincer of Spen der, Iowa, mother of Mrs. Herb Freeburg, is also here as a guest, :'oming for the graduation of Don Freeburpr. 4-H NEWS The Fancy Feeders 4-H Club met at the home of Steve Klemrne May 15, at 7:30 p.m. Names of the different breeds of sheep were given for roll call by the members. Members practiced assem bling the different meat cuts on cattle, swine and sheep. Next meeting will be held at Larry and Lyle Engelkemier's June 1. A lunch was served by Mrs. Bill Klemrne. The Denny Hirz family of Denver, Colo., arrived here Fri day for a vacation with their relatives and friends. Mrs. Jean Reafleng returned home Sunday morning after spending 15 days In Chicago with her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Reafleng J a r m a n. Mrs. Reaf leng flew to Chicago to be with her daughter who had major surgery. Mary J. Patton Is home now after six weeks at St. Joseph Hospital In Omaha. She is get ting along fine now. Mr. and Mrs. George Tooth aker and family will be living In Kansas City, Kan., after mid June. The family lived In Platts mouth the past five years. Mr. Toothaker has been In Kansas City working since the first of this year; the family is joining him now after the close of the school term. Mrs. Fred Fischer underwent surgery this morning at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Buddy Poppy Sale 'Success' The VFW Buddy Poppy sale May 25, was "successfully carr ied out," Post chairman Leonard Lutz and. auxiliary chairman Mary Neljon ,-aid today and ex pressed their "appreciation to the community for their gener ous contributions, and to the Junior auxiliary Cub Scouts, ladies of the Auxiliary and Post members for their assistance." Lutz said $354.01 was the total of proceeds for Buddy Poppy day. Prizes were awarded to Vicki Sp.tcher, Debbie Riniard, Debbie Porter, Donald Gray, Robert Shafer and Darrell Duncan for outstanding service In sale of 3uddy Poppies. Union Clubs Have Outing in Omaha UNION (Special) Union Woman's Club and North Lib erty Extension Club, were in Omaha last Wednesday, May 23 where they had dinner together at a cafe and attended "Ciner ama Holliday." There were twenty-two in the group. Attending were: Mrs. Lewis Rogers, Mildred Harris, Myrtle Kendall, Dorothy Hobscheidt Karen Hoback, Margaret Garri son, Ruth Todd, Nettie Mougey. Union VSCS UNION (Special) The WSCS met at the church last Thurs day afternoon with 17 members in attendance. Devotions were led by Mrs. Cross. Mrs. Todd conducted "The Pledge Service," the theme "Giving Yourself." Pledge cards were given out and signed. Mrs. Cross, Mrs. Pike and Mrs. Stine read articles on the Quadrenial Emphases, telling how Faith, Prayer, Study and Service, are all needed to im prove world conditions. This part of the service was closed with a prayer read in Unison. Mrs. Balfour was In charge of the service entitled "The Res ponsible Christian Citizen." Mrs. Beverly Herman con ducted the Installation Service for the new officers. Refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Martha Ex line and Mrs. Minnie Comer. Book Report At Cullom Club Meet The Cullom Extension Club held's its May meeting at the home of Mrs. Earl Anderson. The meeting was called to order by the President Mrs. Leonard Stoehr with the flag salute and club creed. A book report was given by Mrs. Stuart Meisinger on the book "Mountain Ahead" by Martha Ferguson McKeown. The book was donated to the 11 bary by the club. Club members will hold a family picnic at the home of Mrs. Otto Petereit June 3 at 5:30. The lesson was given by Mrs. Earl Anderson and Mrs. Gerold Keil on "Exercises for A Life time." Lunch was served by Mrs. Fred Wehrbein. Dinner At Mynard Honors Graduate The basement of the Mynard EUB Church was the setting Sat urday night for a buffet supper, honoring Wayne Molck who graduated Tuesday eve ning from Plattsmouth High. Host and hostesses for the event were Mr. and Mrs. Neal SneJl (Mrs. Snell is Wayne's sister) and Mrs. Dorothy Molck. The class colors of blue and silver were carried out in the decorations highlighted by a three-tier cake depicting the past, the present and the future. The past was represented by a school boy in short pants, the present by a graduate complete with cap and diploma, and the future by a silver rocket ready to be fired from a launching pad inscribed with the class mottc "If God be With Us; Who Can Be Against Us." The tables were centered with bouquets of flowers flanked on each side by ice blue candles. Invocation was given by Mar vin Hatcher of Lincoln. A short program followed the supper. Those taking part in the entertainment were: Vicki and Steve Molck, a piano duet; Mrs. Marvin Hatcher (sister of the honoree), "A Tribute to Oui Mom"; Linda Snell, an accor dion solo; Earl Jenkins gave a short talk and recited some in spirational poetry; then closed the program with a prayer. Puchalla, Mrs John Altschaffl, Pam and Judy, have returned from Pone a City. Okla., where they visited at the Assumption Villa where the girls are planning on entering in 1963. Mrs. Schuster's nieces. Rose Ann and Susan are Juniors next year at the school. They also enjoyed a visit with Mrs. Schuster's sister, Sister Michaeline at Tonkawa, Okla., and the John Coughlin farm where they enjoyed looking at the oil wells and seeing how they are operated. There was quite a bit of tor nado weather in the area, but the trip was enjoyed by all.
