EDITORIALS Electric Cars I' rem T.IL'S until 1 1 G 1 . there were no electrically driven automobiles on the mar ket. There is one electric car on the market t !a, ;;nd it is known as the lered iy the National Union Kleetric Cor l oration, at ahout $.'!,f."0. The rane in sjreed of this chicle is limited, but it i eh. aper to un less than a cent a mile, ldictrics make ood taxis or commuter t ins. 'I In y v'o only about forty miles an hour, but they have few moving parts and, con. equently, service charges are low. It is interesting to note that in 1 8D8, an ( lectric cai' held the world's first offi ci.il land speed record of approximately forty miles per hour. A year later, the record was raised to about sixty-five miles an hour aain it was an electric auto mobile. Three ears later, an electric car raced at the unheard of speed of one hun dred and twenty miles per hour, but elec tric automobiles have done nothing so spcilacular since that time. There is some speculation that elec tric cars may return in force. An Kngiish nian by the name of F. T. Ilacon has in vented a remarkable new power source called the fuel cell. According to X. V. I'urdy, writing in the Atlantic Monthly, it is possible that the fuel cell may bring us an electric auto mobile in the near future with a range of up to five hundred miles anil a speed of up to seventy miles per hour.
