EDITORIALS Income Tax Returns The Internal Revenue Service has an nounced a timetable for installing: a nation al network of electronic tax-checking ma chinery. The electronic system will be in troduced into the Atlanta region first. Busi ness type returns filed in a number of southern states are being checked by this electronic equipment beginning on January 1, 1962. Individual returns will be handl ed after January 1, 1963. One example of what the machine can do is as follows: it will be able to com pare the interest or the dividends which a company claims that it paid to an individ ual with the claims made by the individual in his return. When the machine detects something wrong on a return it will pro duce taped instructions for straightening out the return. These tapes will be sent back to appropriate sub-headquarters where the information will be put on punch cards. The punch cards will be used to act ivate printing machines which write a let ter to the taxpayer. A question which occurs to us is this: when a taxpayer receives a letter and doesn't understand it, who is going to be able to explain to the taxpayer just what the machine intended? Visions of auto loads of sparkling liquor nabbed by the officers, highway robbers and other daring crim inals floated through the mind of the on looker as the men were led toward the building wherein blinded justice presides in all her dignity. All guesses as to the cause of the "pinch," however, were wrong as the men were part of a band of "tourists" or gypsies who had made their advent in the city and sought some spot where they might park their cars and spend the night and when they stopped, the fact that their cars were without the mystic numerals that the state has set aside for auto owners, was noted by the lynx-eyed officers of the law and the male portion of the party were irtvited to proceed to the court house wherein Michael Tritsch deals in the auto license and to procure themselves one of the plates that would entitle them to travel the highways and give the merry laugh to those who would stop their progress. How ever, the hour was too late to secure the license and the party compelled to remain over night camped in the old brick yard on Washington avenue on the site of what we hope to make Hero Park. The members of the wandering Romany tribes surely have found this city one that is rough and trying as they had many experiences in the sum mer months attempting to sneak in and get away with a few. dimes by fortune telling only to run into the strong arm of Chief Jones. However, it's a great life if you don't weaken." Phone 252-W Olive.
