Brush Fire NEHAWKA (Special i The Nehawka Fire Department was called to the farm of Mrs. Gert rude Barnard located south of Murray Friday to put out a brush fire started near the house tenanted by Mr. and Mrs. Max Warren. The Warren children ran to the Robert Schlichtemeicr home where the fire department was summoned. The fire was extinguished be fore the department arrived with the help of the Schlichte "Tier's fire extinguishers and water carried by Mrs. Warren. Jack Hallstrom Principal's Aide At Benson High AVOCA (Special) Jack Hall strom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hallstrom, has been ap pointed assistant principal at Benson High in Omaha. Benson Hish has 1,950 students and a faculty of 70. Hallstrom a graduate of Avoca High School, was principal of Mount View, Omaha, School since 1958, and prior to that taught at Monroe school in Omaha six years. He received his BA from Peru State Teachers College and his Masters Degree from Omaha University. He is a veteran of World War II in Korea. Several relatives attended funeral services at Otoe for Mrs. Sporhase nee Anna Meyer. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Baier re turned Tuesday by plane from a visit with their son Sterling and wife at Ft. St. John British Columbia. Mr. Francis Stevans moved to Wichita, Kansas where he will be with a missile site. Robert Hallstrom and family are spending a week fishing in Minnesota. Mr, and Mrs. Jim Ehlers and Jeffrey, Bertrand visited at the Henry Maseman and Dena Ruge homes Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sam land, Avoca announce the birth of a daughter Aug. 11 at Syra cuse Community Hospital. She is the former Ruth Beckfelt, Syracuse. It was learned here that Joe Koener Sr. is in Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln due to serious injuries he received in rear accident Sunday near Murdock. Accompanying him were his son Joe but he received minor in juries. Arnold Stohlman and son Wayne who were also in the car are at Providence Hospital, Lin coln. They are expected to be released today Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Dettmer and Sandra visited her sister and family Mr. and Mrs. Don Noerrlinger at Centralia, Illinois, and will also go to Ohio and Missouri before returning home. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haas child and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Heine went to Oberlin, Kansas Saturday to visit Rev. and Mrs. A. Zeilinger and stayed over to attend church Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Tritsch, Otoe announce the engagement of their daughter Marilyn Carol to Larry Brammier, Dunbar. They plan a November 5 wed ding. Miss Tritsch is a gradu ate of Avoca high school and lived here before moving to Otoe. The Woman's Fellowship of the Congregational Church met Thursday with Mrs. Maynard Bruns and Mrs. Ann Mickle. Mrs. Roy Ruhge led the devotional period. There were reports on the bake sale. Mrs. Calvin Car sten conducted a short business meeting. Mrs. Emma Van Winkle, Omaha and Mrs. Jerry Pointer were visitors. Mr. and Mrs. George Allen came home Sunday from a va cation in the Black Hills. Her mother, Mrs. Wickam, Lincoln and Mrs. Ted Wilson assisted in the store. Maria and Mischelle stayed at the Norton Johnsons and Mike and Barbara were in Lincoln. Mrs. Henry Maseman, Mrs. Sophie Kepler, Mrs. Martha Ruge, Mrs. Dena Ruge and Frances visited Mrs. Amelia Bal four near Nehawka Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. John Emshoff came home Saturday from a two weeks vacation in Washington state. Mr. and Mrs. Art Reimers, Plattsmouth came Wednesday evening to get Diane who has been visiting at the Elmer and Sophie Kepler homes. Visiting in town Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hamptman, Nebraska City, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Steckley, California. Mrs. Maynard Bruns and Mrs. Ann Mickle attended funeral services Tuesday at Syracuse for Mrs. George Viox. The Golden Rod Garden Club got 1st at the County Fair on their flower arrangements and the Green Thumbers 2nd on their club arrangements. Mrs. Bill Weir and Dennis have been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kammann while Bill is at Camp Ripley, Minnesota with the National Guard for two weeks. The Pineridge Swine Club and their leaders went to the homes of members to see their project. They plan a swim party after the fairs. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rippe and her sister Miss Arlene Gess returned home from Colorado Springs after their vacation. Mr. Leo Zillig, Seward was guest speaker at the Congrega tional Church. The Friendly Farmerettes and the Swine 4-H Club received lsts on their floats at the Cass Coun ty Fair and the LeRoy and Len ard Havemans families received 1st on their train. Steve and Susan Rippe held a swim party at Syracuse on their eleventh birthday Tuesday. A surprise patio picnic sup per was held for Mrs. Elvin Ems hoff on her birthday Monday evening. Neighbors were her guests also her mother, Mrs. Seegal and Crystal. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Braden camp visited in Virginia last week where he met several of his army buddies. The Golden Rod Garden Club met Monday with Mrs. Elmer Hennings. Roll call was "White Arrangement." Mrs. Sill talked on "Plants for Shady Places" and Mrs. Clara Ruhge "All One Color Arrangement." The flow er show will be Sept. 16 at the town hall and different arrange ments were discussed. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dettmer attended a Dettmer reunion at the Bethany Park Lincoln Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Carr, Ne braska City were in town calling on friends Wednesday. Mrs. Melvin Carr, Lincoln spent Wednesday with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stub-bendick. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Baier re turned to their home Wednes day at Anaheim after a two weeks visit here and at Beatrice. Modern Teens Trio again Wins In Song Contest WEEPING WATER (Special) A trio from the Modern Teens 4-H Club won a purple ribbon at the Congregational Church in the Cass County Fair 4-H Song Contest. The girls are Carol Nickels, Mary Alice Wood and Susanne Seeger with Mrs. S. H. Harmon as the director and ac companist. This is the 4th consecutive year that the Modern Teens have won the highest award in the song contest and also the fourth year that they will repre sent Cass County at the State Song Contest in Lincoln in the small group division. The Busy Bees 4-H Club also won a purple ribbon in the large group division and will repre sent Cass County in the j State Contest in Lincoln. Mrs. Arnold Detmer is the leader of the club. Mrs. Clarence Norris and Mrs. Edward Van Horn are leaders of the Modern Teens. The Happy Hearts 4-H Club won a red; Keen Teens, blue; Happy Helpers, blue; Busy Homemakers, blue; Junior Lead ers, red. Mrs. Merle Rogers and Mrs. Charles Bell were superinten dents in charge of the contest. Alvo WSCS AVOCA (Special) The regu lar meeting of the Women's So ciety of Christian Service was Wednesday afternoon at the Church basement, with 19 mem bers and a visitor present. Mrs. Marion Kellogg was in charge of the business meeting. Mrs. W. C. Fawell gave the prayer calendar. Mrs. Ray Sch weitzer told of plans for an ice cream social for the month of August. Mrs. Harold Timblin was pro gram chairman. The theme "Council of Churches." Mrs. Rose McDonald received word Monday of the death of her cousin Mrs. Blanche Mae Skiles, 67, in Glendale, Calif. She was buried in Little Country Chapel Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, Calif. Mrs. Skiles was formerly Blanche Wooley of Waverly. Mrs. John Johnson and Mrs. Niles Coleman visited with Mrs. William Strelck of Murdock Tuesday afternoon. Sunday evening visitors at the John Johnson home wore Mr. and Mrs. Sayles Thomson and Billle of Lincoln. ArrWM wOTICE Town Hall Work Voted at Avoca AVOCA (Special) A meeting of Presidents of organizations was held at the library Saturday evening; nine members were present. ! Mrs. Allen Ehlers, president of the library board, presided. A report was given by Treas urer Mrs. Zaiser. She reported that $529.72 would be divided between library and firemen. It was voted unanimously to buy material for a ceiling for the town hall and the firemen will do the work. Mrs. Zaiser and Mrs. Ehlers were appointed to see about the material.
