NOTICE OF FINAL SETTLEMENT IN THE COUNTY COURT OF CASS COUNTY, NEBRASKA To all persons interested in GIVES ALL-SEASON WEATHER PROTECTION Schools Near; Motorists: Revamp Driving Habits By Melvin Paul StateJiouse Correspondent The Nebraska Press Association LINCOLN With the opening of the fall school term has come the yearly reminder from state officials for motorists to be on guard against tragedy. Dr. F. B. Decker, state com missioner of education, says in addition to all the children walk ing to class, there will be more than 23.000 riding school buses daily. Nebraska law, Decker said, clearly states that when warning lights on a school bus are flash ing all tiaffic, coming towards or following behind the bus, must slow to 25 miles per hour. When the stop arm of the school bus is extended, he added, all traffic must stop and remain so until the bus resumes motion. The only vehicles to which the law does not apply are those traveling on a highway that is divided and which are on the side of the road approaching the bus. Decker urged motorists to ex ercise the most care to protect the thousands of youngsters walking to class along Nebraska public roads and streets. Officials noted the situation is most critical when the schools first open since children are still filled with the carefree attitude of vacation, coupled with the thought of returning to school. Thus, they say, the children may forget to be careful. "To protect these children, all of us who drive a car or any other motor vehicle must obey all signs posted on the highway, around school sites and at cross walks," Decker concluded. Vital Figures Fewer people got married in Nebraska last year than in 1959 and the divorce rate was also down slightly. That's the report of the State the estate of Katie Wolpert de ceased. In 1960, there were 2.092 di vorces granted and 10.635 mar riages performed. This com pares with 2.124 divorces and 10.724 marriages in 1959. But the rate of people marry ing, based on each 1.000 people was 7.5 in 1960. compared with 7.4 the year before. The divorce rate was stable at 1.5 per 1,000 people. Brides are getting younger also. Dr. E. A. Rogers, state health director, said more people were married at 18 in 1960 than at any other age. In 1959. the top marrying group was the 19-year-old one. June continues to be the fa vorite month for tying the matri monial knot. About 46 per cent of the di vorces were obtained after less than 6 years of marriage. Twelve per cent of the mar riages ending in divorce had en dured for more than 20 years. Of those marrying in 1960 71 ' were exchanging vows for the first time. Ite Cream Production of ice cream reached an all time high in Ne braska last year, according to the State-Federal Division of Ag ricultural Statistics. But, said the division, produc tion of creamery butter was the lowest on record. Nebraska turned out 8 9 mil lion gallons of ice cream in 1963 as against 8.7 million gallons in 1959. Creamery butter dropped 3 per cent, totaling only 56. 5 mil lion pounds. The cut lowered the state from 4th high state to 5th. Payrolls Payrolls in Nebraska topped a billion dollars in IS 60 for the fir:4 time in the state's history. This is the finding of Univer sity of Nebraska researchers who wrote in the August issue of Business in Nebraska that the 1960 figure was up 8.9 per cent frcm 1959. Since the 1950 employment has increased nearly 50 per cent and average pay has climbed the same amount while payrolls have more than doubled, they said. The researchers said the fig ures are difficult to understand since the state's population boost during the same period was only 6 per cent. A Classified Ad in The Journal tost as little as 50 cents.
