Over a million patients are treated each year in public and private mental hospitals. The cost of caring for these people is over a billion dollars a year. In addition to those who are hospitalized, it is estimated that several million other Americans suffer from some form of ser ious mental disorder for which they need professional help. Many physical illnesses too are complicated by psychological factors. Mental illness is not a single disease. It takes many forms, including the psychoses, or in sanities as they are sometimes called, the neuroses, and person ality disorders which manifest themselves in various ways. Mental illnesses may be due to organic damages, or they may be the result of severe and pro longed stress and strain or a combination of the two. Both physiological and environmental factors are thought to be con tributing causes, and of course some people are much more sus ceptible than others because of physiological conditions which are not yet understood. Studies have shown that un fortunate experiences, especial ly during the early years, may precipitate mental illness or may be the basis for serious mental disorders in later life. There is no completely satis factory answer as to why one person is able to take the stress and strain in stride, while an- THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, July 10, 1961 PAGE SEVEN other develops mental illness a neurotic disorder, or a psy chosomantic complaint. Some mental illnesses are the result of brain damage due to accidents, Infections, or advanc ed age, but these are in the minority. In most instances of mental illness there Is no detect able change in the structure of the brain. It is a complex organism, and probably less is known about t than any other organ In the hu man body. In addition to finding out how it operates normally scientists are trying to discover exactly what goes wrong when the mind does not behave In a normal fas hion. Psychiatrists and other scienti fic personnel are working with mental patients to discover more effective ways of treating them. Work is also going on to deter mine how the new drugs which make the mentally ill more re ceptive to treatment can be used most effectively without endan gering the health of patients. New and improved techniques for caring for and rehabilitating the mentally 111 are being deve loped and tested. You And The Law (One of a series, "you and the law" prepared by the Nebraska State Bar Association). What Share of Property Do Children Inherit? Children are considered lineal descendants of their parents. In the absence of a will, the stat utes of the state tell what part of his parent's estate each child shall receive. In general, each child is considered the same and will receive an equal share. Each child is the heir of both natural parents in the normal situation. The share that each child receives is, of course, de termined by the number of chil dren and whether or not the de ceased is survived by a spouse. We have previously discussed the share received by a spouse who survives. The children will receive the balance of the estate. A single child whose father dies leaving no widow will in herit all of his father's estate. If two children survive, they will each receive one-half. Chil dren of the half-blood inherit the same as children of the whole blood. The determination is whether the child is the natural son or daughter of the deceased per son. Children having the same fa ther are heirs of that father. Such children may be born of different mothers. Each such child would then be the heir of his natural mother, but not of its step-mother. However, adopted children are treated the same as the natural issue of the adoptive parents. Thus if a step-mother adopts her husband's children, then they also become her heirs. A child born out of wedlock is the heir of its mother. It is the heir of its father only when the father acknowledges such fact in writing before a competent witness. The number of children who will inherit is determined at the death of their parent. The living children of a deceased child will succeed to the rights of their parent. Thus the grandchil dren, whose father is deceased at the time of the death of their grandparent, will inherit their father's share. The same would be true of great grandchildren as lineal descendants of a deceased great grandfather. S. Department of Agriculture and University of Nebraska officials concluded at a special meeting here Friday. Farmers can help corn plants recover from corn rootworm damage by keeping the top foot of soil supplied with adequate moisture and applying addition al nitrogen fertilizer in irriga tion water. Attending the special meeting were: Dr. Wayne Howe, head or the USDA's Northern Grain In sect Research Laboratory, Brookings, S. D.; Dr. G. M. Boush, associate professor of entomology at Virginia Poly technic Institute stationed at Holland Virginia; Dr. Roscoe Hill chairman of the Univer sity's Department of Entomo logy and Dr. Gerald Weekman, assistant professor of entomo logy. The Federal scientists said it appeared that everything possi ble was being done to help Ne braska corn producers solve the corn root worm problems. Dr. Bouch stated that Virginia peanut growers faced a similar problem with the southern corn rootworm two years ago. He is conducting a research program in Virginia similar to that be ing carried out by Dr. Weekman in Nebraska. The Nebraska pro gram includes 841 test plots in Hamilton and York counties as well as numerous demonstration fields over south central Nebr aska. Dr. Howe expressed an inter est in developing a cooperative research program on the con trol of corn rootworm which might involve several land grant colleges including the Univer sity of Nebraska and the North ern Grain Insect Research Lab oratory. The officials expressed the idea that crop rotations might aid in the control of corn root worm. In addition there may be a possibility that the insect has developed a resistance to the chemicals now being used. While no reports of corn root worm damage have- been re ceived from nearby states the officials expressed the belief that the insect may exist in oth er .states. However farmers In Nebraska may be more aware of the insect than are farmers in other areas. The current corn rootworm problem in Nebraska is confin ed primarily to an area extend ing west from Seward County to Lincoln County, south to t h e Kansas border and north of the Platte River several, counties. Following the meeting Dr. Weekman took the USDA scien tists on a tour of field plots in south central Nebraska. Robert E. Roselle University Extension entomologist has been examining corn plants throughout south central Ne braska this week. In an early report, Roselle said the new chemical diazinon seemed to be giving better control of corn rootworm than either aldrin or heptachlor. As a result he recommended applications of one to two pounds of diazinon per acre as a row spray prior to hilling. After hilling farmers should keep the top foot of soil moist and apply 20 to 40 pounds of nitrogen in the irrigation water to help plants recover from corn rootworm damage. the actual facts must be deter mined before the exact answer can be given.
