Urea Instead Of Protein in Dairy Rations LINCOLN "Urea is a use ful and satisfactory substitute for part of the protein supple ment in a concentrate mixture for dairy cows," according to P. H. Cole, University Exten sion dairyman. "However, concentrate ra tions containing urea will never be superior to rations provid ing the same amount of pro tein from ordinary protein sup plements." "Urea is an organic com pound that is made synetheic ally. It can be used a a feed supplement and contains 42 per cent nitrogen which is equival ent to 262 per x;ent protein. The dairy cow can utilize this non protein nitrogen compound and convert it into protein in the rumen," Cole explains. "O n e pound of urea and 6 pounds of grain will replace 7 pounds of oil meal." "Urea fed in excessive a mounts may decrease the palat ability of a feed and in extreme cases it may be toxic. The recommendation is that urea should not make up more than 3 per cent of the total concen trate ration or more than 10 per cent of the protein supple ment part of the concentrate." When considering the use of urea, Cole suggests keeping the following points in mind: Urea provides no energy. Urea is not efficiently convert ed into protein unless the ru men bacteria have an ample supply of energy. Too large an amount of urea in a concentrate mixture may make the mixture unpala table. Urea has little or no value as a protein supplement for dairy calves. Urea is best utilized when it is fed along with homegrown grains. Molases is not a satis factory substitute for all of the grain. If a ration is already suf ficiently high in , protein there is no point in adding urea to it. Urea is not. well utilized by animals if the ration is already high in protein.
