Bottle c GRAND ISLAND The most, common insect and disease problems of the elm can be min- i imized by applying controls within the next month. i That's the advice of Joe1 Range, University of Nebraska District Extension Forester, sta-! tioned here ' "An soon as the air tempera-, ture is above 40 degress and be- j lore leaf bads begin to swell, it will be time to control scale in sects 0:1 deciduous shade trees and shrubs. Most harm in this area has been to elm and lilic. In many instances it has weak ened or killed plans," Ytange points out. If stems or branches of elm appear to be covered with a black soot, the tree may be in fested with European Elm Scale. The soot is a fungus whicn grows on the honey dew which scale insects excrete. The scale insect is difficult to control in summer. Best control can be obtained when the trees, and shrubs are dormant. Several oil sprays are available which are manufactured for tree spraying. Such oil' sprays will mix with water. Spray can be prepared by mixing 3 gallons of oil in 100 gallons of water. For smaller a mounts, combine 8 tablespoons of oil in 1 gallon of water. Com plete coverage of the plant is necessary. As a result, hydraulic equipment is required for spray ing large trees, Range points out. Dead branches of elm should be pruned out. Dead and dying elm trees should be removed and burned by April 1 to destroy the breeding place of elm bark beetles carriers of Dutch Elm Disease. At the present time, Dutch Elm Disease has not been found lit Nebraska. Therefore, spraying during the dormant season with DDT is not neces sary. ThP elm tree has not been bypassed by disease," according to Range. "For the last several years there has been premature defoliation of many elm trees, particularly Chinese Elm trees. Some lost their leaves right af ter, leafing out in the spring. This was caused by leaf spot. If this defoliation occurred early, the trees leafed out again." . Generally, the disease does not warrent control. Those who wish to spray particular or val uable trees should use Doraeaux mixture just after the leaves have unfolded in the spring. If a wet spring exists, a second and third spray should be ap plied at two or three week in tervals. If canker worms are nrpspnt. DDT also may be sprayed to control the worms. WHAT WILL IT MEAN IN TERiS OF TAXES? Based upon tax laws as they now existon bonds amortized over a 20 year term at 4' , the yearly payments on $65,000 would approximate $5,460.00 per year. The 1959'assessed value of all tangible property, (as supplied by the County As sessor), was $4,679,194.00. To raise $5,460.00 would require a mill levy of 1 16 mills. To interpret these figures into terms easily applied, this means a tax of ! only 56 cents for each $1,000.00 of actual or market value of property. j' 5 t, PLEASE REMEMBER: - The $(55,000 Bond Issue is for the purpose of building a swimming pool - bath ; house - fence - complete with all necessary equipment.
