Journal Want Ads Pay THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, June 1, 1959 PAGE SEVEN May 'Normal' As Average In Corn Belt May, 1959, has been a rather normal month as a Corn Belt wide average. Rain, tempera ture, threatened frost have oc curred about as usual. This has been reflected in corn planting progress 65 per cent on May 20, say DeKalb's observers from their 20-odd vantage points. This compares with a 70 per cent average for the past five years on the same date. Chief exceptions to normal ity are southwestern Iowa and parts of Nebraska where too much rain has caused delay. Shenandoah, Iowa, reported on ly 10 per cent of corn planted May 20 and Fremont Neb., on ly 35 per cent. The northwest northwestern Iowa and southern Minnesota is finishing planting first a gain as usual after a slow start. Four locations there reported 95 per cent of corn planted on May 20. Two central Illinois lo cations, Tuscola and Monmouth, reported 80 per cent as of the same date. Scattered frosts were report ed on May 15. Biggest danage from this frost was reported in northwest Ohio where it killed a high percentage of the com mercial tomato, acreage. Rainfall has been quite plen tiful in nearly all areas with much shower activity. A rain of 4 inches was reported at Spen cer, Iowa, and much of the once-dry northwest Iowa-Minnesota area was well watered a galn. This same rain area ex tended over into the Dakotas which have been experiencing one of the driest years on rec ord. Farmers there have been waiting to get enough moisture to plow before planting corn. These first showers for a lone J time, May 20, may get them in to action. Copper Sulfate Will Control Moss in Lawns Copper sulfate or blue vitriol can be used to control algae or moss in lawns and water tanks, says John L. Weihing, Exten sion plant pathologist at the Un iversity of Nebraska. Copper sulfate is easily ob tained and will do a good job of central, the pathologist re ports. In water tanks, Weihing re commends one ounce per 15, 000 gallons of water, which is about one-half part of copper for each one million parts of water. Copper concentration a bove 2 parts per million Is tox ic to livestock. The proper proportion for a 100-gallon tank can be obtain ed by disolving one-half ounce of copper sulfate in 10 gallons of water and then adding one cup of this solution to each 100 gallons of water. For lawns, a small amount of copper sulfate will control algae or moss . without damag ing the lawn. However, too much copper can kill grass, weimng warns. Apply copper sulfate to lawns at the rate of 5 ounces in 4 gal lons of water for each 1,000 square feet of area, Weihing added. Do not water the mater ial into the soil. Fish Planted in Nebraska Lakes LINCOLN More than 110,000 fish, including such desirables as perch, rainbow, brown trout, crapple, bass, bluegill, channel catfish, white bass, and north ern pike, were stocked in scat tered Nebraska waters during the past month, reports Glen R. Foster, Game Commission's fisheries chief. In addition, Foster said 31, 825 pounds of carp were planted in "carp only" waters. Stocking included: Louisville Lake No. 1, rainbow trout; Lou isville Lake No. 2, rainbow trout; weeping Water E. City Lake, carp; Weeping Water City Lake perch, crappie. Prime Minister Neh'ru of In dia, during a parliamentary de bate on the Tibetan revolt: "Nothing must be said or done that endangers friendly rela tions."
