Mas on announced today in summar izing VHMCP's activities during its four years of operation thru 1958. The 35.000 loans placed by thf VHMCP total about $333 million. Of this total, more than 8,000. amounting to almost $73 million were for members of minority groups. The others were for bor rowers in small communities where home financing is often not readily available from loc al sources. "Had it not been for the VH MCP, the 35,000 hrynebuyers who have been helped by the pro gram might have lost out in the general competition for housing credit," Mason said. Families of modest means who were helped through VHM CP to finance the purchase of low-priced homes have been the major beneficiaries of the pro gram, the Housing Administrat or said. Half of the loans were made to families with annual in comes between $3,000 and $6,000. ' and nearly 60 per cent of the homes they purchased ranged in price from $5,000 to $11,000. Created by Congress in the Housing Act of '54, the VHMCP provides the means for private lending institutions to rerhan-, nel part of their available FHA j and VA mortgage funds from financial centers to previously ! neglected areas in the housing! market. ; County Court George W. Ak-Sar-Ben Lists Racing Improvements OMAHA The safety theme will dominate the improvement program at the 1959 Ak-Sar-Ben meeting which opens Friday, May 15, and runs through- July 4, E. F. Pettis, chairman of the race committee, says. Most noticable to the specta tors will be the new goose-neck al! - aluminum rail which has been installed in place of the old wooden rail around the inside of the track. It is an exact dupli cate of the original rail of this type installed at Hollywood Park, Calif., a few years ago. This innovation not only adds beauty to the plant but is more practicable from the safety standpoint, particularly for joc keys. "We are most grateful to the officials of Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, who al lowed us to use their plans for this exact duplicate installa tion," Pettis said. Customers at Ak-Sar-Ben will also benefit from the ime of a fourth tower for the all-important film patrol. This has been located at the head of the stret ch turn and will track the hor ses as they make the all im portant turn for home. The ad ditional tower is expected to have an influence on cleaner riding by jockeys. The third improvement, Pet tis added, is the enlargement of Ak-Sar-Ben's trailer court on Pacific Street which will be used by the horsemen and their fam ilies. This is the most modern trailer court in the mid-west, Mr. Pettis pointed out, and is complete with up-to-date facil ities. It is also used by stockmen at Ak-Sar-Ben's annual live stock show in the fall. The Ak-Sar-Ben track will be open for training April 1. Louisville Judge Charges Assault William D. Kahlar, city police judge at Louisville, filed a com plaint in County Court Satur day against Mrs. Helen Austin, the wife of the village marshall at Louisville. The complaint charged that Mrs. Austin assulted him March 9. The charge grew out cf an incident in the judge's office during a discussion between Mr. Kahler and City Police Officer Vern Austin. The Judge says Mrs. Austin slapped him. IK Youth, 14, Gets 2-Year Parole District Judge John M.
