EDITORIALS This New-Fangled World A few days apo General Curtis I,c May. Vice Chief of Staff of the U. S. Air Force, flew from Tokyo to Washington in minus thirty minutes. This may sound strunjfe, but fact is that he arrived over Washington thirty minutes before he. had taken off in Tokyo. Of course, General LeMay had the ad vantage of having crostted the International Date Line and gained a day. But the pure jets, which are soon to be on commercial airlines and which are already operating as fighters today, are doing just what General LeMay did,, every day. All of which brings up some good questions in our now-fangled world. For example, if one forgets to mail his income tax return, or forgets to comply with some other legal requirement and have his letter postmarked at the right time, he will be able to jump into aa airplane and fly back wards into yesterday, and make the dead line. Or, if one is collecting per diem pay, as another example, and he flies for twelve hours, and arrives at the exact time as when lie left, or even earlier, will he be en titled to per diem pay? Likewise, if he is working on an hourly basis, and he spends twelve hours on a plane, arrives at the same time as when he left, it may be hard for him to determine how long he worked, etc. In other words, we are living in a pret ty snazzy age, the old cotton-picker who once said that if God had intended man to fly he would have given him wings, might have had something. Or at least it seems that way sometimes. Down Memory Lane jr YEARS AGO -v Seven thousand persons are report ed to have attended the Cass county fair at Weeping Water that closed this week. There was a fine participation by neigh boring towns, Syracuse had a float and large delegation in the parades, while riattsmouth was represented by a float and several buHiness houses also from this city participated H. C. Doggess, ath letic coach at the riattsmouth high school,, juxt entering his third year at the school tendered his resignation. He is quitting here to accept a position at Ava, Mo., a larger field of activity. He came in 1936 and his 1937 basketball team was, runner up at the dirstrict meet Marion, 22 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hild, was one of the prize winners at the Cass county baby show against a field of fine competition riattsmouth high foot ball team dropped a G to 2 game to Weep ing Water as a part of the last day pro gram. Weeping ater scored when Jake Kenner, quarterback ruced twenty-five yards into riattsmouth territory Dale Heed, on an off tackle play, scored the touchdown. In the first quarter Minor and Steinkamp tackled a Weeping Water play er behind the goal line on a punt return for their two points John Gilmore, son of Dr. and Mrs G. H. Gilmore of .Murray, has returned from his tour of duty with the Re serve Officers training corps, being assign ed to the 17th infantry at their summer camp at Camp McCoy, Wise. Mr. Gilmore returned to Omaha and will resume his studies at the University of Neraska medi cal college Jerry Adam of this city has been named as line coach for the Wesley an University football squad Two Cass county towns have secured WI'A projects for the coming year, Weeping Water has secured $-10, 307 for a Cass county audi torium including sidewalks, parking lots, heating and plumbing and electrical sys tem, South Bend has secured $1,145 for the repair of a school house. nr YEARS ACO J w State highway department is rush ing plans to get a temporary bridge over the I'appio on the King or Trails highway just south of Fort Crook. The bridge was washed out in the flood. The travel over the road is being checked altho it is hoped to have the road opened in a short time. A temporary bridge will be placed on the present timbers William Balfour of Ne hawka, 83 years old, who in the civil war fought in the 45th Illinois, departed for, Denver where he will attend the national! encampment. He came west at the close of the war and settled in Otoe county and has since resided in the southern part of the county Father W. L. 1). Iliggins, for eighteen years pastor of St. Patrick's church at Manley and later at Dawson, died at St. Catherine's hospital in Omaha after an illness that has covered several months - Bread trucks from Omaha were stopped here by Chief of Bolice Johnson to collect occupation tax and after some argu ment the drivers were taken to jail to await their lawyer and bond. "But drivers are still find ing ways to run off the pave ment, or hit a center island, or each other." Statehouse Personality He doesn't make headlines -but he wins a lot of friends. That Statehouse personality is State Engineer L. N. Ress, who has been hitting at a new theme - the driver must know his faults, admit them, and then take steps to correct the defi ciencies - made the statement. "Within the next 10 years," the engineer states, "one of every four families can expect to be stunnd by the news that a loved one has been hurt, crippled, maimed, disfigured for life, or killed in a traffic smashup." He adds further that traffic safety engineers say few child ren today can expect to go through life without being hurt in a motor mishap. But, unfortunately, the en gineer commented, statistics, slogans, "the scare technique," all have little effect in a safety campaign if the drivers them selves continue to regard traf fic laws and enforcement as they do. "The majority of motor vehicle operators," he asserts, "see themselves as above the need for training or warning." Ress said Nebraska and the nation is in the midst of a na tional traffic emergency which "threatens the life and limb of every one of us." He was in show business until recent years, acting, singing or paying musical Instruments. Tall and stately, he keeps the throng of statehouse tourists in high spirits with his banter, developed from his theatrical life, a stint with the circus and Buffalo's rodeo. Smith makes no bones about his pride in Nebraska's world famous skyscraper. Once in a while, on a light day and with a small group, he sneaks them into the unused Senate chamber and beats out a few hot licks on his 60-year-old trumpet He claims he can still hit high G. Smith still plays occasionally with an orchestra. The job is not all easy. There are summer days when 3,000 to 5,000 tourists visit the building daily, during four tours. That's a lot of talking and a lot of people.
