Word was received here that Mrs Eva Bond was a passenger in the bus which crashed near Heat rice last week. She was hos pitalized at Beatrice with a broken thumb and other in juries. Her son Otis and family visited her Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Viox, Lin coln and Mrs. Ann Mickle, Mr. and Mrs Maynard Brims enjoy ed a picnic dinner Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sill and Mrs. Ann Mickle attended the flower show at Ashland Friday. Guests of Mrs. John Mohr Fri day were Mrs. Bryan Seezel, Mrs. Sophie Emshoff, Mrs. E. Rawolt. The afternoon was spent playing cards. Rita Neumeister, Beverly, Faye and Dennis Rippe helped Steven and Susan Rippe celebrate their 8th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. John Emshoff, and granddaughters Sue and Johnna are doing- chores at the Ed Koester farm while they 'are in Minnesota visiting her par ents. Ralph Emshoff, Omaha visited Ills parents over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bose visit ed at the Wayne Pedersen home near Weeping Water. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Morris and Kathy visited at the home of Mrs. Grace Blessing Sunday and went boating at South Bend in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. William Dettmer and their sons and families at tended a Dettmer reunion and picnic at Steinhart Park Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zalser en tertained at dinner at the Grand Hotel, Nebraska City, Sunday. Later they returned to the Zai ser home to play cards. Mrs. Henry Maseman came home from Lincoln Sunday where she got acquainted with her new granddaughter, Judy Lynn Shroder. Janette Helper, Carter Lake, Iowa, is visiting relatives here. Members of the Golden Rod Garden Club visited the Roebeck Peacock farm near Louisville Friday. Horn home in Arapahoe over the weekend. The Avoca Homemakers had an all day meeting at the home of their leader, Mrs. Albert Bose. This was the older group, the sewers and cookers getting their display ready for the fair. Mrs.. Nancy Carsten was able to come home Sunday from the hospital. Rev. and Mrs. Aeschbacker left Monday for Missouri where they will visit his brother who is very ill. Mrs. George Turek, Sioux City, Iowa spent several days with her mother, Mrs. Herman Fren denburg. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ruhge, Mrs. John Ruhge, Mrs. Minnie Neu meister and Bertha visited at the Jack Ruhge home near Tal madge Sunday. Mrs. Clara Ruhga, Lincoln, spent several days of her vaca tion -here. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Vogt, Elmwood at Bryan Memorial hospital, July 24. The bubys heart a misplaced and surgery was per formed to transplant it. The mother is the former Eldene Studdendick. Union items Mrs. L. C. Todd Phone 2441 Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mere-; dith spent a week in Minnesota ; and returned to Union last Fri day. They report a fine time, and the climate much nicer in , Minnesota than in Nebraska: hist now. ! Raemae Ilenrv of Plattsmouth was a weekend guest of Nancv Todd. Mr. and Mrs. John Slater of Amarillo. Tex., spent several days in Union as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Balfour over the i weekend and attended church ' services at the Methodist Chur-j ch last Sunday. Rev. Arthur L. Embree and j wife came to Union last Sunday ; morning where Rev. Embree preached the sermon at the Methodi.-t Church. We welcome the new pastor and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Paasch and two daughters Lynn and Ellen spent several days in Owensville, Mo., visiting Jerry's parents and also visited rela tives in Columbia. Mo. Mr. and Mrs. Verl Ackley, Karen and Wayne and Mrs.. Johnson of Mead, mother of Mrs. Ackley are spending a week in Taylorville, 111., where they are visiting Mrs. Ackley's bro ther and familv. The official board met at the Church Monday evening with a good attendance and with our new pastor, Rev. Embree, and wife. Friends of Mrs. Lee Faris have received letters from her telling them that she is feeling much better and may be back in Union soon. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Keedy of Ashland were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Will Porter. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Rich and daughters Irene Fae and Iola Mae drove to Columbus, Neb., last Sunday to leave the girls to attend the Youth Fellow shin Camp for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Todd Sr. had the following Sunday dinner guests at their home: Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Todd Jr. and dau ghters Jane and Beverly, Rae mae Henrv of Plattsmouth and Mrs. L. G. Todd. Loaves of white bread were brought and judged by the members. The topic of the afternoon was "Showing and Modeling garments at the Fair". Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fairfield's guests last Sunday were their son, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fair field and family of Plattsmouth, and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Fair field and baby of Omaha, also Mrs. Alice Vernoy and Leona, Clayton Fairfield and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Buster of Lincoln. Karen Howe attended the "Swim Show" at Wahoo Wednes day evening. Mrs. Clara Skiles Prouty was buried in the Alvo Cemetery Saturday afternoon. She made her home with her daughter. Dr. Margaret Prouty at Madison, Wise. Her son. Herbert Prouty, of Hartford, Conn., was also here She was 83 years old. She was a sister of the late Mrs. S. C. Boyles. Mrs. H. M. Weichel was at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brenning at Denver, Colo., last week. Word was received the Brenning's son, Dennis, is at Lebanon. He is in the Navy. Miss La Von Howe is at Page, this week at the home of her roommate for two years at the University, Miss Betty French. Boy Scout Troop 242 went swimming at Li noma Beach near Ashland Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Timb lin and Pam were Saturday eve ning guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Vincent and family. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Miller took their crandson, Roger Nel son, home Saturday to Omaha and brought Steve, home with them to visit his week. Six members answered roll call with a cookie recipe. A demonstration on "Oatmeal Drop Cookies" was given by Joyce j Vander Hoef. Lemonade was pre- pared by Sue Leaver and Sharyl j Vander Hoef. Aaron Howe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wihon Howe en tered his 4-H calf at the Stir up and received a purple and blue ribbon. CANCER BILLETS' Albany, Ore. Cancer - fight ing radioactive "bullets" have been developed by Bureau of Mines scientists. The "bullets" designed to be either "shot" or implanted into cancerous tissue, are actually small metal cylinders cut from fine strands of high-purity chromium wire produced only at the Bureau's Northwest Elec trodevelopment Laboratory. They measure a tenth of an inch in length and are a thirtieth of an inch in diameter. League and the Yankees and j White Sox in the Midget League I ndvanced in the recreation pro gram baseball playoffs this week as rain curtailed the Tuesday night play. The Pirates heat the Giants 12-3 but the Cardinals-Indian game in the Pee Wee division was washed out. A second-round game was scheduled tonight in the losers bracket between the Giants and the loser of the rain-ed-out game. It of course depend d on the outcome of the Cardinals-Indians game. In the Midget playoffs, th Yankees beat the Braves 5-0 and the White Sox downed the Dodgers 1-0. The Braves and Dodgers were scheduled to night in the losers bracket. The White Sox tallied the only run of their game in the first and retired the side in the Dod ger fifth with the tieing run on third. Clark Finney's Pirates ded icated F'red Fischer's Giants, 12-3. Monday night in the play ground baseball tournament. Craig Smith with three hits and David Sullivan and Tim Kalasek with two each led the Pirates.
