May 1,19,S Life Story Of Florence Todd Sheldon Told Florence Todd was born on March 21, 1888, at Nehawka, Ne braska to Lewis and Florence Sheldon Todd. When she was only (wo weeks old her young mother died, and from that time she lived with her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Sheldon. She attended grade school and (wo years of high school in Ne hawka and graduated fj-om Weeping Water Academy. She entered the University of Ne braska, where she was a mem ber of Delta Delta Delta soror ity, and graduated with a Bach elor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1911. In June of that same year she was married to George C. Shel don of Ellenburg Depot, New York. They made their home in Nehawka where theye have lived continuously since. In 194(3 they moved to their present home where Florence had lived with her grandparents a a girl. Two sons were born to them but both died in infancy. Later, a daughter, Ruth Ann, was born to them. After tne death of her father's second wife, leaving seven young children motherless, Florence helped during her summer vaca tions to care for her brothers and sisters, and spent much time in sewing for the girls. They have all loved their sister, and always found in her a lov ing and sympathetic friend. Her sister, Mary, was sick and stayed with her for a long time. After Mary's death, her daugh ter, Beverly Bonner, came to make her home with her aunt and uncle - for them all a re warding relationship. Two other nieces, Betty Todd and Lois Giles stayed at their home for periods while attending the Ne hawka school. She cared for hf mother-in-law, Mrs. Irwin L. Sheldon, in her home during the final months of her life. After Florence's elderly uncle, John Todd, was left a widower, he came to make his home with them, and remained there until his death. She often said that she moved into the old home M that all the family might feel free to come at any time - and she certainly did achieve her goal. Not only was it place to come for physi cal comfort and the good food she served, but her home and garden were an inspiration to all who came - for the dignity and beauty of it all - a creation of her artistic soul. She and her husband, George, were united in a common pur pose to serve their community to the best of their ability. They have been members and pillars of the Methodist Church and leaders in all endeavors for the best interests of their town. Florence was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, Nehawka Woman's Club, Nehawka Flower Club, Extension Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Only this year her project for Woman's Club was writing the life history of her pioneer Grandmother Julia Sheldon, thus recording much of the early history of Ne braska, and Nehawka. Such were her dreams, such were her examples of service, that her lite has left the com munity and all her friends and relatives richer for her sojourn here. Such are the treasures that endure. Two months after suffering a severe stroke, Florence suffered a second stroke and passed awav at St. Marv's Ho.snital in Nebraska City on April 20. 1958 at tne age of 70 years and one month. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, George C. Sheldon: her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Glenn Thackcr of Ithaca New York; her niece and nenhew.
