"o o m w THE PLATTSIVIOUTH, VAPiE SIX NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Mundav, March 10, 1958 lYack Practice Underway H Pheasant Loss Believed Light The recent snow storm in some pints of Nebraska resulted in sonic pheasant loss, particular ly in the areas of IiIrIi winds, reports Lloyd P. Vance, gamp division chief for the Nebraska Game Commission. "It wasn't the amount of .'now,' Vance pointed out, "but the blowing snow that was re sponsible for the pheasant loss." "The mild temperature and deep snow in some areas appar ently did not effect survival. Ilovever, in areas where hish v. inds occurred, some birds suf locr.ted. Ice and- snow clogged the mouths and nostrils. Some I i' ds also were covered by deep snow drifts." Preliminary reports, however, indicate the loss to be light. Plattsmouth High School be gan track practice today even though the running track the squad will use (some day) at the athletic field was better suited for swimming. Coach Cecil McKnight will work his squad indoors until he can take them out, working this week on calisthenics and wind developing. McKnight hopes his squad has belter luck with the weather than it did last year. The Blue Devil runners didn't get outside until April because of weather and track conditions. And, because of the bad wea ther in past weeks, the coaches of other schools and directors of invitation meets have been hold ing back. McKnight doesn't have his schedule drawn yet al though usually at this time of year dates are pretty well set. There are some almost-ice-free valleys near the South Pole.
