The occasion honored Vance Balfour on his birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Rutlede attended funeral services Sat urday for Mrs. Rutledges aunt, Mrs. Rebecca Mines, 84, at Council Bluffs. Mrs. nines is the sister of Mrs. Vesta Clark of Plattsmouth and Mrs. Roselle Clark of Union. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Meyer, Plattsmouth, were guests Sun day of the I. A. Warlicks. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartley, Nebraska City, were guests Sun day of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wads worth. Mr. and Mrs. John Tanner and son took Mrs. Henry Swartz to North Platte Friday to visit her (laughter, Mrs. Bob Williams and family. Henry Lyons, Colorado Springs, Colo, was a guest Mon day of Mrs. Sadie Shrader and Gerald. The Shraders and their guest went to Nebraska City for Mrs. Christina Chappell, who will visit the Shraders and the Elmer Stolls. Lyons is the son-in-law of Mrs. Chappell. Mrs. R. B. Stone, Mr. and Mrs ed Sunday from Gillette, Wyo., where he was employed and v.iil now make his home here to le near his children. Mrs. Gerald Ackley and child ren were dinner guests Sunday of the Verne Ackleeys. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Horn, Oma ha were guests Sunday 'of the Gilbert Edmonds and Mrs. Ger ald Ackley and children joined them for supper at the Edmonds home. Mrs. Maurine Wolph, Lincoln, was a guest Monday of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wolph. She stopped enroute to Clarinda, Iowa, where she will spend several days with the Gene Maier family. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dierking and Cindy, Otoe, were guests Sunday of the John Tysons. Gary Weik is making a satis factory recovery from an eye injury when he was shot with a BB g'.r.. He is still under the doctors care. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schlich temeier and sons spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. James Budin at Clarkson. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Beudefeldt, Omaha, were guests Saturday night and Sunday of Mrs. Char lotte Niday. Mrs. F. T. Hansen spent Saturday night and Sun day with the Fred Hansens. Oren and Hall Pollard visited their mother, Mrs. Ruth B. Pol lard at Brown hospital in Ne braska City and also called on Crede Harris of Union. Mrs. Jake Staoert presided at the meeting of the PTA Thurs Thursday to Scottsbluff to at tend the funeral Friday of a re lative. Wm. Witowack. They re turned home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ross en tertained their card club Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Banks and son, Council Bluffs, were guests Sunday of the Gene Banks family. Mrs. Elmer Stoll called in the afternoon. Sandra Stapert, Shirley Ross and Nancy Ehlers were over night guests Friday and for din ner Saturday of Thelma Rae Ketelhut a the Jack Llndsey home. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Fullerton and family, Lincoln, were guests Sunday of the Harvey Bark-hursts. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Pollard were dinner guests Sunday of the Harold Pollards and obser ved the birthday of Merritt. Mon day Mr. and Mrs. Oren Pollard were dinner guests of the Mer ritt Pollards on Merritt's birth day. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Wirth and children visited at the St. Tho mas orphanage In Lincoln Tuesday. Rosemary and Joe were adopted by the Wirths from the orphanage. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Neumeister had dinner Sunday evening in Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Poling, Ne braska City, were guests Sun day of Mrs. Lottie Snyder. Mrs. Snyder kept the Jones children Jones visited his mother at Mercy hospital in Council Bluffs. Mrs. Jones shows improvement following injuries in a car ac cident. Jo Ellen Nixon, Omaha, was home for the weekend. Connie Nolte was two years old Feb. 23 and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Beavers of Bennett, had a birthday dinner in her honor. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Nolte and family. Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connor, Peru, and the Clifford O'Connor family were guests Sunday of Claude O'Connor. The Clifford O'Connors were guests Sunday evening of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Midkiff. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Sand and Sunday of the Merle Meyers. Mr. and Mrs. Eugen Sparr and daughter have moved from a farm northeast of Nehawka to a farm near Red Oak, Iowa Mr. and Mrs. Frank Warden and sons were dinner guests Sunday of the Hugh Warden's of Union. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Don Wachter of Palmyra. Mrs. Gus Neumeister was a guest of the Congregational church Women's Fellowship Thursday afternoon when Mrs. Roy Ruhge and Mrs. J. H. Ruhge were hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dobrovich, Hazel, 111. have a new daughter, Judith. Sputnik 2, the Soviet satellite which has been circling the earth since November 3, weighed 1,118 pounds, a little over half a ton. The newly launched American satellite wlghs 30 pounds. The reports say that "prepar ations for launching Sputnik 3 are in an advanced stage." To keep one man fully em ployed and earning a reason able Income, a farm requires about 216 acres. Jed will be home for a furlough during the month of April and will then go to Japan for two years. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wolph returned home Wednesday even ing from a six weeks trip to the South and West. At Avon, Miss., they were guests of George Sheldon, former governor of Nebraska; at Bishop, Tex., they visited Mr. and Mrs. Joe Doedy ns and family and at Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. and Mrs. Lyman An derson and family and Dan An derson. They also visited relat ives and friends in southern and northern California and at dif ferent cities on their way home.
