THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, October 7, 1957 PAOE FIVE Atomic Power Plant Will Be In Operation by COLUMBUS-The construction schedule for Consumers Public Power District's atomic power plant at Hallam has been set to have the first phase of the plant in operation by April, 1900. W. P. Venable, CI'PD's super intendent of power supply, and Dr. Emerson Jones, Consumers' nuclear physicist, announced the j over-all planning for the liaii lun construction after receiving the ol'licial "go-ahead" that the Atomic Energy Commission -CPPD Contract for Consumers' atomic power plant had been signed. Venable said work on the first of the project, covering the con ventional steam power plant facilities, will get under way early in 1958. He also revealed that the reactor phase of the plant construction will be under AEC supervision. It is estimated that construction on the sodium graphite type atomic power fa ciities at Hallam will start in mid 1959. Venable stated that the atomic plant is scheduled for testing in late 1961 with full operation set for early 1962. Dr. Jones, 33, a graduate of the University of Nebraska and Grazing Warning Given in Regard To Sudan Grass Cattle owners today were warned that the time of year is approaching when livestock may become poisoned from grazing Sudan grass which has been frosted. The American Foundation for Animal Health, which issued the warning, pointed out that Sudan grass normally is excellent for age. However, when affected by frost, certain chemical changes sometimes occur in the grass, and it develops a content of prussic acid, or hydrocyanic a cid. Cane and several other com mon forage plants can be equally dangerous under some condition of drought or frosting. The poison acts quickly, and can kill an animal within a short time after the damaged Sudan grass has been eaten symptoms , include an appearance of drowi-1 ness difficult breathing, and dif-; iculty in standing. Whether a ! poisoned animal can be saved depends upon how quickly a vet erinarian can get to it. Treat-; ment involves injecting antidote i directly into the blood stream. : Recoveries sometimes seem j almost miraculous, the animal getting up and walking about shortly after the administration of the antidote. Such poisoning always occurs as a critical emergency, and treatment must be prompt to salvage affected animals. Sudan fjrass can also be made poisonous sometimes by the eff ects of drought or extremely hot weather, the Foundation said. April, 1960 the University or New Mexico with degrees in electrical engin eering and a doctorate and mus ters In physics and mathematics, will advise on CI'PD's atomic energy phases of the Hallam plant. Jones and Venable will coordinate conventional and a tomic power activities at Hal lam. Venable, a veteran of 35 years in the power field and active In Nebraska electric utilities since 1930, revealed that CPl'D's con ventional steam plant buildings will cover about 30,000 square feet. The conventional plant's facilities will include a building for the turbo-generator, a boiler room building, another building which will house offices, a con trol room, pumping and heater equipment and storage space. The building housing the boil er will be about 152 foot high. An elevator and stairway struc ture for access to the top of the boiler will be higher than tho boiled building. The plant's chimney will be over 165 feet high. He also said th plant site will be served by sidings from the Rock Island Railroad's main line which runs near the plant. The preliminary construction work at Hallam will include land leveling, installation of water, sewage and drainage facilities, gas supply lines, road grading and pre-operational improve ments. The atomic section will include a building measuring 270 feet by 90 feet. It will house the nuclear reactor and redated equipment. Attached to the reactor struc ture will be another section measuring 120 feet by 90 which will be a building measuring 270 feet used for offices, the storing of soduin and laborator ies. Venable and Jones pointed out that the AEC will have control over construction and supervis ion in the construction of the a tomic section.
