News of Elmwood Area By Mrs. Dudley Leavitt Tel. 42147 ELMWOOD (Special) John P. Gonzales, was the honored guest at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wright, (Emily) Gonzales, Thursday, July 26. A large birthday cake decorat ed with "happy 98th birthday" was the center of table decor ations. Mr. Gonzales was very animated and enjoyed the day and all of the food. Other members of the Gon zales family who helped him celebrate were Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gonzales, his son and wife with whom he lives. His grand son Donald J. And Mr. and Mrs. John Wiel age of Crete, (the former Maur ine Baker, daughter of the late Sadie Gonzales Baker). Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Thurman, Alex andria, Va., and their two daughters. (Mrs. Thurman is the daughter of Mrs. Wielage). Two grand-daughters of Mrs. Clark Gonzales, Pam and Jerry Jones, of Muskogee, Okla., and Mrs. Ruth Monning, sister of Mrs. Emily Gonzales. Four generations of the Gon zales family were present to en joy the family gathring: John P. Gonzales, the honoree, his son, Clark, Donald J. Gonzales, son of the late Wright Gonzales, and Donald's son, John Richard Gon zales, the namesake for his great grandfather. The younger generations en joyed horse back riding and other recreations, while the others visited. Totman And His Wife Visit Elmvood Friends ELMWOOD (Special) Our former local dentist, Dr. C. M. Totman, wife Naomi, and son Ned, returned to Elmwood last Friday. He entered the service and after taking an advanced course at the Brooks Army Medical Center, was stationed in Keser slautern, Germany, for three years. At the time of taking up his duties there he became a Lieu-' tenant Colonel and was the com manding officer of a medical detachment Dental Unit. They have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Clapp while waiting fox some of their goods to arrive from Germany. Lt. Col. Totman re-enlisted and is to be assigned to duty in Maryland after a furlough.! Family Gathering Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Juilfs and Mrs. Ruth Monning attended a Monning family gathering at Clarinda, Iowa, Sunday. Sever al from Sterling, Nebr., attend ing the gathering. Gonzales Family Enjoys Gathering ELMWOOD (Special) A fam-1 ily gathering was held at thelj home of Mrs. Emily Gonzales Sunday. All enjoyed a picnic dinner and visiting. The guests of honor were Don ald Gonzales and family who are visiting his mother on a vacation. Their home is in Sil ver Springs, Mo. His wife, Mary was the forme Mary Tolhurst, the three daughters, Cheryl, Barbara and Nancy and John Richard complete the family. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. Rudolph, and daughter, Phyllis of Malcolm; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mills, son, David and daughter, Judy of Murdock; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dickmeyer and daughter, Julie Jean of Omaha; Stewart Mills and three boys from Wabash. Mrs. Mills is at present visiting at the home of James Mills and family of Buffalo, N. Y. Mrs. Ruth Monning, a sister of Mrs. Emily Gonzales, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Leavitt and Mrs. Grace Blessing, an aunt of Mrs. Donald Gonzales, were al so visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Miller and family of Gretna were cal lers at the home of Mrs. Emily Gonzales Sunday to visit the Donald Gonzales family. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Backe meyer had a party for their son, Scotty, on his first birth day, July 15, with a cake deco rated with one candle. Both grand parents were present. They are Mr. and Mrs. Orval Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Backemeyer. Also present were Karen and Joan Backemeyer, and Ted John. Return Home Alyin and Lena Henriksen re turned home Thursday from Colorado, having spent a short vacation there visiting friends at Denver, Beaver Crossing and Mason City. ! Royal m. at Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phillips and Gracie, and Jeanette and Helen Walker, tripped to the home . of the former's daughter and family, the Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Novak's, near Crete, Sunday. The Women's Society of Christian Service met Wednes day afternoon at the church with Mrs. Orris Lanning and Mrs. William Ketelhut as cohostess es. The Trinity Lutheran Aid members, and husbands as guests, met Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fleishman. Miss Georgia Stillwell left on Sunday evening for Portland, Ore., to visit relatives a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Silas Contley tripned to Pleasant Dale last Sunday taking their 10-year-old grandson, Johnny Sommers home after he spent several days visiting his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Palmer accompanied their son, Ray mond, to the latter's home at Wahoo, last Saturday and visit ed several days. The son and family moved to Wahoo recent ly from Lincoln. He is a court reporter. Bible School The Methodist Vacation Bible School will start Monday Aug ust 6, at 9 a. m. to 11:45 a. m. and continue through Friday. The lessons will be on the Bible, Children may attend from kin dergarten age to eighth grade age. Craft work will also be conducted for those attending. Promotion Day is August 12 at 10 a. m. , Appendectomy Ralph Holdsworth, husband of Mrs. Lucille Root Holdsworth, underwent an appendectomy at Bryan Memorial Hospital, Fri day evening. Miss Lila Root is also at the hospital undergoing X-Ray and observation for a kidney infection. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Root and sister of Mrs. Holds-worth. Leave for Texas Mr. and Mrs. Jack - Bell of Odessa, Tex., left for their home after enjoying several days visit and vacation with Mrs. Bell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Folken and Mr. Bell's parents in Kansas. Mrs. Bell is the for mer Berneda Folken, a grad uate of Eagle Schools. Mrs. Elizabeth Eidenmiller returned to her home in Lincoln Saturday morning, and will be under medical attention for sev eral weeks, following a recent heart attack. Mrs. A. H. Siek man, her sister, and Mrs. Rob ert Phillips called at her home at 2811 South 11 Street last Sat urday afternoon, after spending several hours at the hospital with Mrs. Floyd Siekman whose death occurred shortly after they left. Mrs. Anna Fifer is assisting at the home of Mrs. Margaret Buckley, in Lincoln, having left from her home in Eagle, on Friday evening. Mrs. Buckley is a relative of Mrs. Donlan of Eagle. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Krecklow of Manley visited Mrs. Krecklow's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Winkler, Sunday afternoon. The committee on arrangements did an efficient performance and plenty of food was provided. There was a good attendance, which included 28 children. Some enjoyed swim ming and others boating. Jackie Dennis daughter of Loren Dennis of Bellevue, has been spending the past week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Findley. While here her grandfather took her to Lincoln. She also visited with her grandmother Dennis and cousins, the Wellington Dennis family. Mrs. R. M. Dennis and sis ter, Clara, entertained the Loren Dennis family of Bellevue for dinner Sunday. They returned with them to spend the week at Bellevue.
