There are also com plaints about weeds along the roads. The following is published for your information, and will be complied with: STATUTE 39-706 STATE OF NEBRASKA PLOWING UP ROAD; PENALTY. Whoever shall plow up or upon any pub lic highway without the consent or direction of the overseer of roads shall be fined not less than five dollars nor more than twenty-five dollars. STATUTE 31-221 STATE OF NEBRASKA INJURING OR OBSTRUCTING DITCH; PEN ALTY. If any person or persons shall willfully fill up, injure or destroy any drain or ditch con structed as herein required, or willfully prevent or delay the construction or repair of any drain or ditch in the manner provided by sections 31-201 to 31-223, such person or persons shall be deemed guilty of a mis demeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fined in any sum not less than twenty-five dol- iiul liars nor more than one hundred dollars, or be confined in the county jail not to exceed thirty days. STATUTE 39-257 STATE OF NEBRASKA WEEDS; MOWING AND ERADICATION: LAND OWNERS, OVERSEERS, DU TIES; COST; ASSESSMENT AND COLLECTION. It shall.be the duty of landowners in", this state to mow or otherwise de stroy all weeds to the middle ofall public roads running along their lands at least once in each year, namely, between July 15 and August 15 in each year. Whenever landowners neglect to mow or otherwise destroy the weeds in roads as herein pro vided, it shall be the duty of the overseer of roads on complaint of any resident of his road dis trict to mow or destroy the weeds on neglected portions of roads complained of; and the overseer may charge and be paid from the general fund of the county the wages, as fixed by the coun ty board in each county; PRO VIDED, that no overseer shall destroy the weeds on any road until after the time has passed in which the owner is required to destroy the weeds. A state ment of all money paid to over seers of roads for carrying out the provisions of this section shall be made by the overseers to the county clerk, giving a proper description of lands whereon weeds were destroyed by the overseer of roads; and the county clerk shall include such amounts in making the county tax lists as an assess ment against such lands which shall be collected as other taxes. Gold, Council men L. W. Moore, Ray H. Wiy sel, James F. McMillian and Wm. G. Highfield, and City Clerk Albert Olson. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. Request of Verner Kaffen berger granted to make exca vation in the alley in Block 95 for sewer service to his prop erty. Letter from Fred H. Toman regarding sewer assessment against his property was read and the City Attorney stated that in his opinion the City Council could not remove the assessment from the records. Protest signed by W. E. Bayly and others against Street Im provement District No. 134 was referred to the City Attorney. Petitioned signed by H. J. Pet erson and others for a street light on Livingston Road refer red to the Lighting Committee. Letter from the Woman's As sociation of the First Presby terian Church regarding open ing of clubs on Sunday was read and ordered placed on file. Reports of the Police Judge for the weeks ending June 2nd and 9th were read and ordered placed on file. Parking Meter receipts for the weeks ending June 4th and 11th were reported as $200.00 and $207.00 respectively. Motion carried that city em ployes under supervision of the City Council be granted one week vacation with pay after one full year of continuous em ployment and two weeks vaca tion with pay after two full years of continuous employ ment. The Mayor appointed Coun cilman Moore and Wiysel as a Special Committee to check in to sick leave plans for city em ployes. The matter of parking cars on North 4th Street north of Avenue A was laid over to a later meeting. Engineer's first and final es timate for construction of pav ing in Street Improvement Dis trict No. 113 read and motion carried that the amount of $2, 406.57 due the contractor be paid. Engineer's final estimate No. 2 for construction of paving in Street Improvement District No. 115 read and motion carried that the amount of $3039.26 due the contractor be paid. Certificate of Engineer for construction of street improve ments in Districts Nos. 113 and 115 accepted. Resolution accepting work and confirming the ordering of plats and schedules of: assessments for Districts Nos. 113 and 115 adopted. Motion carried that the City Council meet as a Board of Equalization for the purpose of equalizing and adjusting the special assessments for benefits on account of the construction of street improvements in Dis tricts Nos. 113 and 115 on Jury 23, 1956 at 7:30 P.M. and that notice of same be published. Gold, Council men L. W. Moore, Ray H. Wiy sel, James F. McMillian and Wm. G. Highfield, and City Clerk Albert Olson. Minutes of! last meeting read and approved. Motion carried to open Oak Street, also known as Avenue B, for travel between 10th and 11th Streets. Opinion of City Attorney read that objections to creation of Street Improvement District No. 134 are sufficient and that or dinance No. 944 is not effective. Motion carried that Leonard Holoubek and C. E. Welshimer be permitted to construct their own curb and guttering in front of their properties and accord ing to city specifications and grade. Petitions for asphaltic oil treatment of 11th Street north from Avenue A, and for 6th Avenue east from 8th Street ac cepted. Motion carried to advertise for bids on 8000 gallons asphal tic oil for Street Improvement District No. 119 to be received and opened July 13, 1956. Motion carried to install a street light on Lincoln Avenue midway between 6th Street and Holdrege Street. Motion carried approving re instatement of Vernon T. Arn and election of Don Wall and Elmer Gochenour as members of the Fire Department. Permission granted to Vernon Watermaiv to make sewer con nection to-' the Chicago Avenue sewer. Petition to vacate Avenue H between 7th and 8th Streets re ferred to the Streets & Alleys Committee. Motion carried that the Fire Chief secure bids on 300 feet IVz inch fire hose and 200 feet lYz inch fire hose. The Mayor brought up the matter of an additional police officer and this laid over to the next meeting. The City Attorney reported that there were sufficient slg-i natures on the petition for cre ation of a street improvement district on Howell Street south of Patterson Avenue. Ordinance No. 945 creating Street Improve ment District No. 135 was then passed under suspension of rules. Reports of the Police Judge for the weeks ending June 16th and 23rd were read and placed on file. Parking meter collections were reported as $240.00 and $220.00 for the weeks ending June 18th and 25th. . CASE, County Judge No. 3305 July 12, 19, 26, 1956 Vacation Trip Ends Abruptly: Father Rushed To Hospital Mrs. Cynthia Dawson, Mrs. Daisy Richards and two chil dren and Charles Dill began a vacation Monday, bound for Lexington to visit relatives there. The trip ended too soon. Near Eagle, Mr. Dill, father of Mrs. Richards, took ill and was rush ed to the Methodist Hospital in Omaha. After observation it was learned he had suffered a paralytic stroke. Mr. Dill remains in the hos pital and is in room 449. WHAT HAPPENED? Nielsen of Plattsmouth who has been associated with the Stock Yards National Bank in Omaha for the last eighteen months as a Field Represenative in the Correspondent Bank Division, has accepted a new position. He will be vice president of Bank ers Service Company of Des Moines, assuming his new duties August 1. Prior to joining the Stock Yards National Bank, Nielsen was associated with the Platts mouth State Bank of Platts mouth for nine years six years as Assistant Cashier and three years as Cashier. He is a grad uate of the University of Nebras ka (1934), taught school for nine years and operated a retail store for two years before en gaging in the banking business. The Bankers Service Com pany specializes in negotiating the sale of banks. Henry H. Byers, president of the company, has had more than thirty years experience in that field. He states that Mr. Nielsen will travel in Western Iowa, Nebras ka and adjoining states and otherwise assist in handling the company's steadily expanding business. Their 1956 bank sales in Nebraska total $550,700 and include three banks with com bined assets exceeding $7,500, 000. The Nielsen's plan to remain in Plattsmouth for the time being as Mr. Nielsen's terri tory will be in this vicinity. Little League Families Hold Picnic-Game By Mrs. L. G. Sunday Guests Mr. and Mrs. O. L. McQuin and grandson, David of Omaha, and Mrs. Bill Houseman and daughter, Patty of Bartlesville, Okla., wrere Sunday guests at the W. M. Rich home. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gribble and son, Bryon of Omaha, spent the weekend with Mrs. Gribble's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Attebery. Barbara and Frankie Wolfe of Lincoln spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs Frank Wolfe. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wolfe, Jan and Mary are spending a few days in Minnesota this week. They spent a week visiting rela tives in Missouri recently. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rogers drove to Wilde Court Park at Fremont last Sunday where they attended the annual pic nic of the former Nebraska Ord nance residents. There was a splendid attendance and Mr. and Mrs. Rogers enjoyed see ing many of their former neigh bors. Marcia and Mary McQuin of Plattsmouth spent last weekend with their cousins, Irene Fae and Iola Mae Rich at Union while their parents went to Kansas City to attend a con vention of auctioneers. Church Services The morning church services at the Methodist Church wrere conducted by members from the Plattsmouth Methodist Church last Sunday morning while Rev. and Mrs. DeSpain are vacation ing in Texas. The visitors were Mr. E. A. Ernst, lay leader; Mrs. Howard Wiles, president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service; and Miss Carolyn Rob inson, who gave the sermon. Mrs. L. B. Mougey was pianist in the absence of Mrs. Snod grass. At the home of her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Zorn, Miss Linda Morton was hostess last Tuesday evening, at a slumber party, given in honor of Janet Clark of Concordia, Kans., who is visiting her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Pat terson. After a delicious din ner, the girls spent the eve ning playing games for which prizes were given. Those pres ent were Donna Meredith, Peg gy Dooley, Janet Clark, Mary Jean Lechner, Linda Morton, Sharon, Shirley and Judy Mor ton and Irene and Iola Rich. In event of rain, the din ner will be served in the Lion's building. Ex-Weeping Water Superintendent Is Athletic Director WEEPING WATER J. Ray Piper, former Weeping Water school superintendent, recently was named director of inter collegiate athletics and assist ant professor of physical edu cation at the University of Kan sas City. He will assume the duties September 1. For several years, Mr. Piper was active in high school and college basketball coaching circles and wras a five letter man at Phillips University. He is presently superintendent of schools at Gower, Mo. District Governor Visits Rotarians In City on Tuesday Fred Preston, Fairbury, Ro tary district governor, was a guest of Plattsmouth Rotary Club at the regular noon-day luncheon Tuesday. Making his annual visits of inspection of district Rotary Clubs, Gov. Preston gave the local organization an excellent rating on attendance and serv ice to the community, and com mended many local Rotarians for their individual willingness to contribute their time and ef fort to Plattsmouth and sur rounding area. He also outlined his atten dance at International Rotary Convention held at Lake Placid, N. Y., where over 750 Rotarians from 56 countries congregated in their annual meeting. This meeting, he reported, and simi lar meetings held over the world, do more to cement bet ter international relations than most all other efforts com bined. He also reviewed the national convention held at Philadelphia where more than 10,000 Rotar ians and their wives met for three days. Mr. Preston met briefly prior to the meeting with President Clem Woster, followed by an afternoon session with Rotary officers and committee heads outlining a district program for 1956-57. $38,835 Suit Filed Here By Ernest Read A $38,835 damage suit was filed in district court this week by Earnest Read of Cass Coun ty against Silas Kincaid of Mound City, Mo. Read charges that on January 25, 1956, he was riding in a car driven by Kincaid when the vehicle turned off the road and crashed into a telephone pole. Read stated Kincaid was in toxicated at the time. Read addad he was injured to such an extent he lost consider able earnings in lost work time and also had heavy medical ex penses. Legislative Unit Plans Meet At Otoe The Legislative Council Com mittee on County Government will hold a public hearing on Saturday morning, July 28, be ginning at 10:00 a. m., in the county court room of the Otoe County Court House, at Nebras ka City. The public, as well as county officials, is cordially invited to attend this meeting and to par ticipate in the discussions. Mrs. Elsie McClintock was in stalled as le petit chapeau. Mrs. Mary Gobelman, chap eau presided at the business session with a large attendance of the membership present. Discussion was held in refer ence to the Christmas seal pro gram. Mrs. Alpha Muncie, who at tended the district meeting held in Lincoln recently, gave an in teresting report of the proceed ings regarding the departmental marche to be held in Grand Island in August. In a very impressive cere mony, Mrs. Mollie Gobelman, chapeau passe installed the new ly elected officers.
