Thursday, July 12, 1956 Avoca's July 2nd Celebration Draws Large Crowd: Prizes Won By Mrs. Henry Maseman Journal Correspondent AVOCA (Special) Avoca's July 2 celebration drew a large crowd despite muddy streets and the annual pageant was termed a success. Featured were races, archery Plattsmouth, Nebraska Abstracts of Title "Title Insurance" THOMAS WALLING CO. contests and a parade of dec orated tricyles and wagons. First prize in the parade went to the Maynard Bruns children for their decorated wagon which used the theme, "hurrah for the red, white and blue." Second prize was won by Er nest Jensen daughters for "the old woman's shoe." And third prize went to Lizebeth Wolph, daughter of John Wolph for her patriotically decorated tricycle. The annual Red Cross meet ing will be held at the Platts mouth Hotel July 16 at 8 p. m. Mr. and Mrs Kenneth Wessel entertained at a picnic supper for Ruth Ann's birthday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Er nest Jensen and daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Linhardt, Mr and Mrs. William Luce arid Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ruhge. Mr. and Ms. Arthur Croft and family of Ralston were Fourth of July guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Marquardt, Ann and Rob ert. Helping Mrs. Robert Mickle celebrate her birthday Saturday were Mrs. Emma Rawalt, Mrs. Caroline Carstem, Mrs. Dena Ruhge, Miss Frances Ruge; Mrs. Fred Ruhge, Mrs. Albert Sill and Mrs. Louis Carsten. Mr. and Mrs. William Dett mer attended a family reunion at Coryell'Park Sunday. The big window at the post office was accidently broken Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bred encamp attended his aunt Marie Bredencamp's funeral at York Monday. Fifth Daughter To Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Koester, Otoe, a daughter was born June 30. The Koesters have four other daughters. Mrs. Walter Stubbendick re ceived wotd of the death of her uncle, William Huffstetter, of Kearney last week. ' As the auxiliary is studying Civil Defense with the possi bility of doing some activity along that line, a film on the subject was presented and discussed. Mrs. Iver Erickson and Karen of Comstock visited at the Er nest Norris home over the week end. Clark Marshall taught swim ming at Merritt Beach and Louisville sponsored by the Red Cross. Later, he will be an in structor at South Bend at Camp Harriet Harding. He will be a councillor and life guard for a group of 4-H members. The Green Thumbers Garden Club met with Mrs. Harry Brockhoff Tuesday. Roll call re quired each lady to make a hat of vegetables or flowers. The lesson was "iris and how to di vide them." Plans were made for a bake sale at the Zaiser garage July 14. Mrs. Harvey Brockhoff was a guest. Bitten By Dog Silas Everett was bitten by a dog Tuesday evening. He had infection and had to receive medical care. Dr. and Mrs. William Aesch bacher and sons joi Lincoln spent the holiday with his par ents, Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Aesch bacher, and all were supper guests at the Salling-Danklet'f home. 95th Birthday ' Mrs. E. H. , Norris quietly celebrated her ninety-fifth birth day with her family as guests. They are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Norris, Mr. and Mrs John Nor ris, Mrs. Carl Tefft and Mr and Ms. Ernest Norris. W. L. Hadsell of Lincoln visit ed at the John Stubbendick home Thursday. Cemetery Kensington met Friday with Mrs. Lawrence Wulf in the church parlors. The care taker is mowing the ceme tery again this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Linhardt and family of Beatrice visited over the weekend at the home of his mother and also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Meyer. Guild Meets Holy Trinity Guild met with Mrs. Oscar Zimmerer Tuesday. A committee was appointed to sew for the altar boys and an other committee appointed to make plans for a cold plate supper to be held on the Carl Zaiser lawn August 5. Rev. Mc Fadden was presented with a spiritual bouquet honoring his forty-second anniversary as a priest. 4-H Helpers Meet Girls belonging to the 4-H "Helpers" club met with their leader, Mrs. Richard Streeter, Friday afternoon. After the reg ular business meeting, plans were made to attend the annual county wide 4-H camp which will be held the last of July at Camp Harriet Harding. Jim Cullen was in town Sat urday. He was on furlough from Veterans Hospital over the weekend. Housekeepers Union Exten sion Club held a picnic dinner Sunday at the Ernest Haveman home for their members and families. Hostesses were Mrs. Elmer Hallstrom, Mrs. Robert Hallstrom and Ms. Haveman. Mr. and Mrs Louis Trietsh and family have moved to the Mary Bose home. Grandson Weds Mr. and Mrs. William Kepler attended the wedding of their grandson, Orville William Kirch hoff to Miss Frances Irene An derson at Palmyra Sunday. .Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Maseman and family of Lincoln was sup per guests Sunday evening of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Maseman. Stuart leaves this week for New York where he will take a week's instruction with the International Business Mchine Company. Lt. Ralph Enshoff of San Antonio, Tex., visited his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ens hoff, over the holiday and also celebrated his birthday while here. The good will Industries will visit Avoca July 23. Mr. and Mrs LaRue Williams have returned home after spend ing several days visiting their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brockley, and son in Lincoln. Mr. Brockley, who recently passed the State Dental Board examinations, has opened an office in Lincoln to practice denistry. Mrs. Harold Koop, Sr., had the misfortune to fall and break a. bone in her arm. She has had several callers since her accident. Nimble Stitchers Plan Picnic Party By Laraine Young 4-H Reporter The Nimble Stitchers met at the home of Leader Marie En gelkemeier recently. The meeting opened with the Flag Salute and 4-H pledge. After the business meeting, members discussed their picnic. It is to be held at Steinhart Park on July 22. The next meeting is the achievement showing, to be held at the home of Sandra Jameson on July 25. The members of Nimble Stitchers are to prepare the lunch. 4-H Live Wire Club Meets at Krecklows ELMWOOD (Special) Dale Engelking reports the Live Wire 4-H Club met at the home of Herold Krecklow Thursday eve ning. The Club went over its year books to check for errors and to see if they were up to date. George Blessing demonstrated the underwriter knot. Then each boy had to tie one. Mrs. Henry Buckholz is help ing in the McDonald grocery and locker. Mrs. Irene Wilson and Mrs. Gladys ; Shron of Benkelman were dinner guests at the Paul Straub home July 4.. They are classmates of Mrs. Straub at the summer school session at the University of Nebraska. Darrell Johnson and Donald Straub are in construction work at the new school house at Ne hawka.
