J" Stokely's Finest Halves Bartlett t U THE PLATTSMOUTH JOURNAL PAGE FOUR Thursday, November 17, 1955 Capitol News By Melvin Paul Statehouse Correspondent The Nebraska Press Association i " """""'"" LINCOLN The Board of Con trol, which governs state insti tutions, was in the news again this week. - And again the subject was mental health. The board met with newly-formed advisory V boards for the mental institu tions and Dr. Cecil Wittson. He is state mental health director. Object of the meeting, held in Omaha, was to ."bring our prob lems" into the open, Wittson said. Several outstanding national figures in the field were on hand for the general briefing on psy chiatric problems. The two-day meeting was the latest in a se ries of developments aimed at improving the mental health program. The board also had something to say about new personnel it has hired recently. Chairman Thomas Dredla said the board has hired several competent persons to help rid the three board members of de tail work. And, he said, the ac tion is paying off. Dredla said the hiring of Pe nal Director B. B. Albert, Witt son, Personnel Director Clifford Wiedenthaler and Harold Peter son, administrative assistant, has "aided materially" in bring ing about more efficiency. Provisions were made m the 1955-57 budget passed by the legislature for the hiring of Al bert and Wittson but not the other two. The latter men were hired after the board was criti cized for spending too much time on details and not enough en policy matters. . Trucking Industry Praised The Nebraska Resources Divi sion, in its monthly magazine had kind words for the trucking industry in the state. The division said the industry has been a "prime factor in in creasing farm productivity" in the state. The magazine article said the industry "is a virtual giant, providing service to every community, industry, shop, store and home in the state." "No segment of the Nebraska economy uses trucks more or benefits more from them than the farmer, the division said. Winter Saving- Van If Nebraska has a winter-long break from the weatherman during which roads are relative ly free from drifting snow, it could be $750,000 richer. That's the report from State Maintenance Engineer John Mc Meekin. One of McMeekin's du ties is to supervise the removal of snow from the roads in win ter. The average cost of snow re moval runs around a hah million dollars but during ths 1943-49 blizzards the total zoomed to more than a million. ., Last year, the state shelled out only $263,495 for clearing roads. This winter, says McMeekin, bis office will be more ready than ever to fight the battle of snowdrifts. He said the state recently purchased six new snow plows. . McMeekin said road clearing lias become "more and more im portant" In recent years. "Twenty-five years ago," he said, "be fore we had so many vehicles cn the highways and so much commerce dependent upon .roads, it was a different matter. Now people want their roads open 365 days a year." Veterans Board Pays A board set up five years ago tc decide who is eligible to re main in the Grand Island Sol diers' and Sailors' Home has re sulted in fewer admissions and more discharges.
