Here a small molded mers atop the golden sections of the fruit. A wonderfully tart nan of grapefruit is the best appetizer possible, from the standpoint of whetting your appetite for the rest of the meal, and also being the sort of thing the doctor recommends, high in vitamin C which . you need every day to keep' in good shape. " Your grapefruit itself may even fit into the color scheme for the holiday this time of year oranges and grapefruit down south sometimes show green on their outer tsurf aces, just the result of chlorophyll (the substance you're now enthusing about in tooth paste and chewing gum) coming along with the bloom for next year's crop. Don't be misled if the fruit in your market has green tinges all fruit shipped is inspected before it's picked and, must be mature before it leaves the groves. Septic Tanks Give Trouble If Not Cleaned Practically all troubles with farm sewage disposal systems can be prevented by inspection and simple maintenance, says E. A. Olson, extension agricul tural engineer at the University of Nebraska. During the digestive process "1 w vir" " " , " 7T torn of the tank, Olson says. Un- less ,thls L?5ie5fLleA i regular intervals, the septic tank may fail to give satisfactory op erations. Olson makes these sugges tions on cleaning a septic tank: 1. A septice tank should be cleaned after the first year's op eration to get some idea of the rate of sludge accumulation; In a large tank sludge will accu mulate very slowly, but in a small one it will collect rapidly and require frequent cleaning. 2. In most septic tanks the sludge should not accumulate to a depth greater than 18 to 24 inches. The depth of sludge ac cumulation will depend on the size and style of tank. 3. Removal of the sludge from the septic tank can be accom ft - 9X . ft -'-l-X B 3 18 t V 'I ft ..... :.::?WTW4Kv v R : plished by the use of a sewage or diaphragm pump. Some times the sludge is removed by bailing. 4. In cleaning the septic tank it is necessary to remove only the sludge . or black material which has accumulated at the bottom of the tank. 5. Sludge which has been re moved from the septic tank should be disposed of in an open field at least one quarter to a half mile from the farmstead. Since this material may contain many harmful disease germs such as typhoid, diphtheria, of dysentry, it should not.be dump ed in open road ditches along country roads. 6. If commercial operators are engaged for septic tank clean ing, somg understanding on the cost should be made in advance. Frequent reports are received where too-high prices are, charged for this operation.
