Corn In Storage Loses Vitamin A, Professor Explains r Corn kept under good stor age conditions will retain its protein and energy content fair ly well but the carotene-chemical substances present in many feeds which animals convert to vitamin A content will decrease os the storage period progresses, according to J. Matsushima, as sistant professor of the Univer sity of Nebraska. Recent tests carried cut by the Bureau of Animal Industry at the U. S. Department of Agri culture's Research Center at Beltsvilie, Maryland, indicate that stored qorn is not a depend able source of the important A vitamin, so essential in main taining the health of livestock. Green forage is one of the best sources of carotene or pro vitamin A, says Matsushima, but when this is not available, al falfa leaf meal or any good qual ity leaf hay, especially alfalfa hay, can be substituted to sup ply this important food ele ment. Good quality grass or corn silage is also a good source of carotene. Farmers who use commercial feed mixtures should check the label to determine that some source of carotene other than corn is present, Matsushima says. Some feeds contain a crys talline or pure fonfc of vitamin. Other commercial feeds are for tified with fish oils to furnish vitamin A. In some instances the vitamin A content is stated on the label. Freshness is im portant, Matsushima empha sizes, since ground feeds tend to lose their carotene and-or vitamin A content with ages. A. 4 A" -. t V-V Jsf 4.
