J Circle No. 3 December 15 at Bible Comment: Understanding ' Book of Psalms Aids Appreciation TSRAEL'S great songbook is; of course, the Book of Psalms. ! It is not the form or structure of the Psalms that is of chief im portance; it is their contents and message. But it may help to add an appreciation and understand ing of them and their rich beau ty if the nature of Hebrew poetry, is realized. Many people associate poetry with the idea of rhyme. There is rhythm, often cadences, in the poetry of the Psalms, but no rhyme. Instead, the structure of He-; brew poetry consists in some form of parallel statement, in similarity, contrast or in some extension or amplification of the thought. Strict adherence to these forms is found everywhere throughout the Psalms. An appreciation of the form and structure of the poetry will dispel an impression of undue repetition that one, might otherwise receive. j The apparent repetition is in-j tended, and one may judge fori himself how it not only gives a sense of rhythm, 'but adds to the emphasis of the thought. In the Psalms is a strong sense of life and movement, typical of j the history of Israel and its re-; ligious life. I Pilgrimage was of the very essence of that history the pil grimage of Abraham to Canaan,' the descent into Egypt and the; return, through the wilderness,: the Exile to Babylon and the return to the homeland. I And "going up" was of the very, essence of worship ascending to the hill of the Lord," going to Jerusalem for the religious fes tivals. The Psalms are poems of re ligion on the march. E f:, by CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SOCIETY Sixth Street and Second Avenue That human progress rests upon mankind's understanding of the whoily spiritual origin oi man and tha universe will be brought out in the Lesson-Sermon entitled, "God the Only Cause and Creator," which wid be read in Christian Science services Sunday, December 6, 1953. Among the selections from the Bible, King James Version, the following will be read: "Hast thou noc known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding." (Isaiah 40:28). " This passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy will also be among those read: "Spiritual causation is the. one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress. The age seems ready to approach this subject, to ponder somewhat the supre macy of Spirit, and at least to touch the hem of Truth's gar ment." (170:22).
