J. Sanders, head ot the Patrol, today appealed to the motoring public to recognize and avoid the driving errors which most frequently result in traffic accidents. "Carelessness and inattention to other traffic, signals, and read signs are the basic cause of some of the obvious viola tions such as excessive speed and improper passing which ac tually produce the so-called 'ac cident.' Those factors, coupled with the heavier summer traf fic, greatly increase the acci dent possibilities and should bring to the realization of all drivers, bicycle riders, and pe destrians that personal respon sibility for satety in traffic is not to be taken lightly." As of June 12, the traffic toll stood at 119, 5 more than for the same date last year; a year, which in terms of lives lost, was the worst in Nebraska's traffic history. The month of May produced 13 more deaths than the same month last year. To prove his point that traf fic law violations and traffic ac cidents go hand in hand, Sand ers reported that during May the Patrol's arrest activity reached a new high for any one month in 1952 wnen 2,093 sum mons tickets were issued. An additional 2,221 warnings were given out and 6,683 violation cards were issued for faulty equipment. Fines paid to the courts totalled $33,647.60. The Patrol's activity summary also showed that 1,172 stranded mo torists were aided, 96 traffic safety programs were presented and over 7C0 obstructions were removed from the highways. Colonel Sanders concluded, 'Ihis activity, despite the rise in traffic deaths, bears out the fact that our primary objective is to make the highways safer for all."
