We boys and cirls that man the news desks on any newspaper, large or i small, have some very trying times. Criticism flys thick and fast on many occasions and any newspaper puy who. feels it his duty and the obligation of his newspaper to take a stand and tell readers exactly what he thinks, must also have extremely broad shoulders and a fine sense of humor to stand the gaff. We refer especially to the school bond vote of a little over a week ago. We concede very graciously, that every person has an inalienable right to form his own opinion and follow through on his convictions. We would not care to reside in any country or community where conditions were otherwise. But, in our own opinion, we still be lieve we folk here in Platts mouth missed the boat, even though all the planning could not please everyone. There are folks who believe we fellows who write this stuff are as slippery as an eel. as truthful as the Baron Mun chausen and as cold as an old maid's stare, but, actually, un der this crust of concrete most of us have a warm heart, sym pathy for our fellowman and an understanding of the frailities of humanity. Babies love us and, on occasion, newspapermen have been chased by women and a lot of them caught. But, like the rainbow follow- 1 Ing a storm, the mail box spread a little oil on our troubled wa ters. Opening a neatly addressed envelope at the desk Friday morning, out popped a $50.00 bill. Now, anything over a ten spot can cause considerable more than a stir around most newspaper plants, and one of this size has been known to lead off a riot. Appended thereto was this little note, 'Dear Ron: This just between you and me. You should not be put to so much expense for the 'Yes' and "No's". No fan fares, please. Yours, ." What could bring more joy to a broken heart? A fellow like me just couldn't help but be proud to live in a community that contained even one spirited soul as he who penned his sig nature to that letter. Most peo ple would be hard pressed to believe this man had any inter est in what Plattsmouth did with its school system, but here it was in black and white and backed up with cash. However, there is one thing no individual or group of indi viduals can buy from this news paper and that is service any sheet worthy of its name owes to the community. We happen to be of the old school of news papermen that continue to be lieve that, though a newspaper is owned by an individual, it is an integral part of the commu nity and should at all times stand for what it thinks to be right and best for the area it serves. Properly supported this newspaper includes Community Service as a part of its everyday operating expense. Right or wrong, it can't be bought. We thumbed this $50.00 bill for some time trying to decide what to do with it. To send it back would have offended our friend. So, Plattsmouth's high school band will be sporting a new silk banner shortly. Ward Pscherer, instructor, was handed the bill Monday and has ordered a large white silk banner carry ing the Blue Devil emblem and lettered "Plattsmouth High School Band" in blue. Next time you see the band parade by carrying this striking new banner, tip your hat to a ' fine old gentleman, who, in spite j of his years, like us, sees prog- ' ress over the horizon lor Platts mouth. As for us, we'll probably step around the corner and bawl. See where the Grand Island i school bond election carried ; nearly two to one. A four mil- I lion dollar deal for G. I., broken down to Plattsmouth's size would be the same as voting near $800,000.00 here. The amaz ing part, however, is there is a town with a present school sys tem that would put most com munities to shame but they know a city can never be any better than its educational fa cilities. That's why Grand Is land has grown and will con tinue to grow. We haven't given up we still have hopes for Plattsmouth.
