More Beef Needed Conditions indicate that the na tion will need more beef than we can produce and our need for feed grains for other classes of livestock is such that grain should be used economically in feeding beef cattle, Prof. Marvel Baker of the Univer ity of Nebraska College of Agricul ture said this week. For a large proportion of Nebras ka producers this means carrying cattle for a somewhat longer period with the use of relatively larger quantities of roughage than usual. Palatable roughage of good quality should be used if gains are to be rapid and economical. Alfalfa hay, good quality prairie hay, silage, and the fodders may all be used. Maximum consumption should be encouraged and in the case of coars er feeds this means that running them through a cutter or grinder may prove profitable. If available, at least 2 pounds of good quality al falfa hay should be included in the ration. In addition, from one-half to one pound of cottonseed, soybean or linseed oil meal or cake per head daily should be fed in order to secure more rapid and economical gains. If alfalfa hay is not avail able, 1 pound of ground limestone for eaah ten to twelve cattle should be fed each day. Clarke-McNary Trees Listed Eighteen varieties of trees are on the Clarke-McNary list for 1942 43. As before, orders for the seed lings will be taken during the win ter months and delivery will be ; made at planting time next spring.' Cost of all varieties will be $1 per hundred, or 1 cent each. The complete list includes Ameri can elm, Chinese elm, mulberry, cottonwood, green ash, hackberry, honey locust, black locust, Russian olive, wild plum, boxelder, cara gana, soft maple, chokecherry, yel low pine, Austrian pine, jack pine and red cedar. Extension Forester Earl G. Max well of the Nebraska College of Agriculture recently pointed out that seedlings oi'ten can be planted before farm work starts. Fall plow ing the ground, leaving it rough saves on labor required next spring. More Hogs for Nebraska As more farmers and organiza tions boost the expanded hog pro duction program for Nebr., in 1943, interest among Cass County farm ers indicate a desire on the part of everyone to produce pork to the limti next spring. A forty percent f lucieasc lut lilts aiaie as a w uvic has been requested to meet wartime food needs. Information just receiv ed as this is being written, irdi- cates Secretary of Agriculture: Wickard has revised upward pre viously 1943 hog production goals and at the same time announced a program to support hog prices at an average of $13.25 per hundred, Chicago basis until December 30th, 1944. The Agricultural Extension Ser vice and the Agricultural Experi ment Station of the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture are using their full facilities to help farmers increase production, wher ever possible. All of the experimen tal data for many years of work, along with practical farm experien ces gathered, is being" made avail able to farmers. The " statewide hog production program was' formulated' several weeks back at the University of Ne- braska College of Agriculture and I has the full support o all groaps. I The first step r in getting the ex-1 panded increase in hog numbers has been the county wide ' hog surveys conducted by county extension agents to determine how many farm--ers "need breeding stock and how, vrany have surplus breeding stock for sale. Extension Livestock men at the College of Agriculture pointed out, however, that ore pork', in 1943 jneans on iacrmed, demand, tor pro tela'' supplements. " Faster PLATTSMOUTH, HEBRASKA Neb., as second-class mail matter thriftier ' pigs and feed saving de nPTifls in a larere measure on the use of high protein feeds to sup- plement" the farm grown grains. They also point out that nearly every year as the farrowing season approaches, there is a scramble for breed gilts, and the probability is that this year will see the greatest demand in many years. However, it is hoped that in most counties the demand ' for them can be met lo cally.
